"Rolling into Philly at the 30 Street station, I needed to get dinner. Most folks would have automatically sought out a Cheesesteak but I looked at a map and saw Chinatown was not too far away. After a quick Lyft ride, I stopped at the main gate and decided to just wander a bit to see if anything would strike my fancy. Before I found a restaurant, I came across Hong Kong bakery. Mom and pop Chinese bakeries are increasingly rare nowadays so I'm always happy to check one out. Funny part is, when I tried to open the door it was locked, but the owners inside saw me and came over to open it. I must have gotten there just as they locked it.It was about 7pm-ish so I figured it would be slim pickings but much to my surprise they had plenty of items available! The lady behind the counter was also kind enough to make a dinner recommendation for me (which will be the subject of a future review! .I tried two items out: their Moon Cakes and Egg Tarts. The Moon Cakes are made in-house, which is not as common as it used to be. I picked up the mini ones since I was traveling. These were purely filled with lotus paste, and I have to say they were really good! There was a nice sweetness to them that was not overwhelming. The outer shell was nice and chewy and held together nicely. The egg tarts were not the style I typically get. I prefer the ones with the flaky crust like those I grew up with but I noticed starting around the early 2000's some bakeries shifted over to a more traditional pie crust that was more uniform and thick. That is the style this bakery uses. I would give the egg tarts a B-. The crust was okay, but not super buttery (which is my preference but the filling had a nice, eggy flavor to it with just the right level of sweetness. The next time I am in town, I'll definitely stop by this bakery again to try something else!"

We stopped in on a Saturday. There was friendly service but the buns were stale. The egg tarts fell apart.

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. Do not order their ramen or noodles. I tried their most expensive ramen, and what I received was instant noodles with frozen fish balls and just three pieces of lettuce.

The buns were ok but kind of stale, and the inside was weirdly hard/flaky when I expected it to be more soft. I tried two different kinds and they were both that way, I didn’t finish the second. I’ll probably go elsewhere next time.

Pretty good buns honestly. And cheap too $2 each). Though I will say that the filling is kinda lacking and concentrated in the middle of the bun so you get inconsistent bites. Owners were friendly though. I bet the food here is gas, super authentic place. Voir le carte

The worst Chinese bakery I have ever been to. Bought char siu bao (baked pork bun) There were five very tiny, grizzled, dried up pieces of pork with no sauce. Not even close to how they should be prepared. Just adobo which I immediately threw out. Don’t waste your money

By far the worst Chinese bakery I have ever been to. Had the pork baked bun (chat siu bao)and there were five tiny, dried up, grizzled pieces of pork with no sauce and not even close to how you make buns. Just a dough ball. Believe it or not this is in the heart of Chinatown in Philadelphia disgraceful. Save you money

I purchased a cake here last week, and unfortunately, the inside was stale. While the decoration was lovely, I noticed black spots inside, indicating it had been sitting out for at least five days. I used to enjoy buying pastries from this place occasionally, as it was once very good. However, I won't be coming back again. You might make some money from me this time, but I won't spend another dime here. Voir le carte

The egg tart was served in an aluminum foil mini bowl, which I found off-putting since it seemed like the owner reuses them, even though they are meant for one-time use. I appreciate environmentally friendly practices, but the tart ended up being squished. Additionally, the pricing was strange—$2 for cash and $3 for card payments, which felt like a scam. The tart itself was only mediocre. I walked in expecting better, especially since the reviews didn't seem that bad. I'm not sure where all the good photos come from, but the few unflattering ones I saw at the beginning reflect the reality more accurately.

Everything is made fresh every time I visit, and the owner and staff are some of the kindest people I've ever met. When it comes to drinks, their bubble teas rank among the best I've tried; they're never watered down, and the boba has a fresh taste—not too chewy or too soft. Lately, I've been really enjoying their Matcha shakes, which pair perfectly with the pastries, creating an incredibly satisfying midday snack. The prices are very reasonable considering the generous sizes of the buns and the ample fillings. Overall, I've been extremely pleased with this bakery. Plus, they stay open late, which is a fantastic feature since I sometimes work late. It’s great to know I can still grab the bu...
