"For multiple years now I have taken my Japanese father here when I visit to celebrate his birthday. Tonight was his 89th birthday. I wish I could go back in time and pick a different spot. As much as I 'd like to go into great detail of all the issues we experienced, I 'll make this as succinct as I can. The owners do not care about your experience, just your money. The chef yelled at us in Japanese (not kind words) not realizing we had Japanese speakers in our group. This happened twice. At the start of our dining, we asked for our group of 5 to not be squeezed into a 4-top when the restaurant was not even a quarter full. They would not accommodate us. At the end of the evening when we commented on this, the server said you can 't expect to have half our our restaurant. This was after they sat multiple parties of 2 at 4-tops as at multiple times during the evening. At no point was the restaurant ever at capacity. After we asked for the bill, they told us a mandatory gratuity would be added to our bill (for 5 people). This was not conveyed ahead of time, nor printed on their menu (not that we wouldn 't tip, but it 's ridiculous to say this after they knew we were not happy with our experience). This gratuity was added TO OUR CREDIT CARD RECEIPT AS A MANUAL WRITE IN ON THE TIP LINE, not as a line-item on our itemized receipt. It was also made after tax--which is not how it should even be done. I was not allowed to keep a copy of the itemized receipt. When I brought it up to the server, she directed us to the owner who pretended to not speak English. I gave up attempting to explain the situation as it was clearly pointless and a waste of my party 's time despite the principle of the situation. As we left the restaurant, the chef said thank you in English, then once again yelled at us in Japanese, still not realizing we had Japanese speakers in the group. My recommendation is to stay away."

I still love this place! If you haven't tried it yet, their Chicken Kara Age curry is incredible. They also have the best sushi in town, hands down.

Naka Sushi offers the freshest sushi in Santa Cruz! The portions are generous and absolutely delicious. I highly recommend trying it out—the unagi is truly exceptional!

Best traditional sushi I've had in Santa Cruz the hamachi was especially good. Portions were large (huge slices of fish on the nigiri). Quaint environment where one would feel comfortable dressed up or down. Kind service as well!

Fresh ingredients, ample portions, nicer on the inside than the strip mall location would suggest in California the best sushi restaurants are often in strip malls. The word has gotten out so get there earlier to be sure to nab a table. Voir le carte

The sushi here is exceptionally fresh and authentic. While some of the rolls are larger than what you typically find, they are absolutely delicious. The service was outstanding! My only concern is that a roll priced over $20 only comes with four pieces. Although they are quite substantial, I would prefer more bite-sized portions.

This restaurant is AMAZING. I love it with all my heart. The people here really pay attention to their sushi. They put lots of care and thought into their food which I really appreciate. What I really like about this restaurant is how they carefully put together their sushi unlike some restaurants that just throw their sushi together.

If you're in search of an authentic sushi experience crafted by a true master, this is the spot for you. The portions are generous, with one nigiri serving essentially being equivalent to two. The fish is incredibly fresh and absolutely delicious, and the prices are reasonable given the size of the servings. I've had some of the best sushi here that I've ever tasted. The salmon was vibrant and fresh, the yellowtail melted in my mouth, and the grilled unagi was the best I've ever encountered—large, perfectly grilled, and just lightly sauced, not a tiny piece slathered in sauce. Food is pretty good but customer service is weird, as Jaime M. said (although no Japanese speakers in my group). Staff seem in a hurry to get rid of us even though we were still ordering food, quiet, not causing a problem, and no one was waiting for tables, but other diners had arrived after us and were just getting their food as well. Both before and after ordering another dish we were told multiple times by both the server and hostess that it was going to take a long time. We responded that we were not in a hurry but it didn't seem to help. This does not feel good. Also the rolls were a bit sloppier tonight than in the past. Probably won't go back.

I recently dined at this restaurant for dinner and had an excellent experience. The price per person was around $30 to $50, which I found to be reasonable considering the quality of the meal. The food was absolutely fantastic—definitely deserving of a 5-star rating. Each dish was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was equally impressive, earning another 5 stars. The staff was attentive and friendly, ensuring we had everything we needed throughout our meal. The atmosphere also contributed to a wonderful evening, receiving a perfect score of 5. The setting was inviting and had a great vibe, making it the perfect place for a pleasant dinner. Overall, I highly recommend this...

"I always thought this was a tiny Mexican restaurant and felt like an idiot to discover it's American-style cuisine with a bar and outdoor patio. The food and service are excellent and quite literally the coolest place is the bar area. This local staple has been here 28 years and owned by the same person. The only thing they don't have is breakfast. Jeanette is the treasure here, although all the employees seemed cool, despite many being younger. They have wine and spirits, but my focus was the six taps of local craft brew from Discretion, Coronado, Corralito's and North Coast Pacific. Corralito's is far up in the hills behind Aptos and I never get up there, but fortunately they get kegs every week. The Richter Red Ale is excellent. It's nice you can sit in the bar and have lunch easily and without a reservation or huge rush. The pastrami sandwich was excellent and I'd expect everything here to be good from the other patrons food I saw. They have a happy hour from 3-5PM where drinks are $2 off, but really the only negative is everything is pricey and it can be occasionally difficult to park if it's busy. I think $9 for beer is quixotic but they have excellent food and service, plus it's a relaxing ambience that also can be cordoned off for groups. The closest thing to Mexican food they have is the Taco Salad btw...in case you wondered. I expected to get an enchilada plate or taquitos and had no idea how wrong I'd been for years driving by. This is also a good place to eat if your going to visit Discretion Brewing in the same parking lot. If that's not good enough, you can buy weed, furniture and mattresses next door as well as a Safeway, Best Buy and Home Depot across the street. So, the location is convenient for doing errands after or meeting folks, being right off PCH. They have parking spots in the front for takeaway orders, with the rest of us using the carpark behind the restaurant. In case you wondered, this was a restaurant 28 years ago before Cafe Cruz, but before that, it was originally a private residence, hence the intensive repurposing you observe today. There's one other small house which survives today in the carpark and the defunct breakfast/lunch place behind Cafe Cruz is slated to open as something similar as Cafe Opal was, with breakfast and lunch only. If Cafe Cruz had breakfast, I don't think any restaurants would ever survive behind them. Cafe Cruz reminds me a little of a favorite family-owned chain in Los Angeles called Hof's Huts (now defunct) but had a very similar model, with a bakery and all-day breakfast being the difference. Anyway, if you can, sit in the bar if Jeanette's working. She knows all the restaurants history and is cool."
