"Rating: 88/100 pts Fate brought me to Alla Voliga when I was in search of good local food, and the meal certainly did not disappoint. I walked in just as they were opening for lunch, and being the only customer in what looked more like the deck of a ship than a restaurant, I actually wasn 't sure if I was in the right spot until a few minutes of waiting when the owner popped out of the kitchen and led me to a table. We have the best fish soup in Trieste, and the second best in Italy, he tells me proudly. I peruse the Italian-only menu and understand almost none of it. While not confident in his own English skills, the owner patiently gave me a few other non-soup recommendations. I ended up settling on the little of this, little of that seafood combo. Out came a fantastic platter of sardine, barley-mixed octopus, olive-mixed squid, oysters, and about 5 other things that he didn 't know the English for and that I couldn 't identify. Everything tasted like it had been freshly caught that morning. It also came with bread, and a huge slice of polenta, which to this day is the best polenta I 've ever had. Prices were very reasonable, and I 'd definitely go back next time I find myself in Trieste...even if it 's just to try that seafood soup that hindsight tells me I probably should have ordered."

"We would never have expected to eat such a good pizza in Trieste, but we had to believe! Neapolitan high impact and well-made ingredients and above all quality. At the first bite we immediately thought that we would taste it in all possible variants, they must all be exquisite. The prices of pizzas may seem high but worth it. Too bad we can't go back because we're not from the area, but we're grateful we could have tasted it at least once. Congratulations to pizza maker!"

"A really good evening and meal. Staff went out of their way to understand my awful Italian and explained the local specialties really well (in English! . The Jota is a must if you like sauerkraut. Food was good and plentiful. Restaurant, all indoor seating, was atmospheric and busy. Prices are good. It was a very enjoyable experience delivered by people who obviously love what they do. Recommended, probably a good idea to make a reservation."

"We read an article in Travel and Leisure from August 2011 that we saved. Admittedly, we visited 2 years after publication. The article describes the restaurant in glowing terms as the best meal I have in Trieste. The author raved about the fritto misto. We ate here recently and were disappointed. First of all, our meal cost $190 for two of us. We had 2 courses. First was amberjack tuna that my wife enjoyed. I had octopus that was just ok, pretty chewy, although the one really interesting part was the tomato ice cream accompaniment. We both had fritto misto and both felt it was mediocre. Wines were far more enjoyable than the food and apparently drove up the price. If cost is no object, you will find the restaurant charming and the service attentive. Silence in this place is akin to a church service. There are only 6 tables. It is a 5 minute walk from the piazza."

"This is the story of how we fell in love with Salsapiriglia and had dinner there twice in a row. We went there with two kids, and they immediately offered some very kid-friendly options to start with. Later, our kids not just ventured onto our plates but devoured one of our main courses like a vacuum cleaner and tasted the rest with the same craving as if they hadn't eaten in a week (even though they had just finished their food). It shows how great Salsapariglia is (those with kids know what I am talking about). It is a small, cozy place with a few tables and more than capable service. They were friendly and always looked after us but never intrusively. After we ordered, the chef Mariaeugenia came out and offered that she could make something of that as a unique local version and shared its story of origin. And how grateful we all were later on for her tip. I won't post pictures, whatever your choice; what you see is what you get. And their pasta was just unbelievable, as we learned they made their own twice a week in their laboratory at 4 AM. The restaurant is run by a couple with three kids, the youngest less than a year old. And how did I learn all this? At the elbow table, just in front of the restaurant, the staff regularly uses it for their breaks. Amazing people, food, and experience! And one more thing, remember to reserve a table."
