Clam Box Of Ipswich

Just leaving a review to say that we think the fried seafood could be improved by the chefs adding salt when the seafood comes straight out of the fryer or in the batter…adding it after is just not the same. The lobster roll was great though :

Food was excellent but to be honest with you I don't eat seafood but my family does so I ate chicken fingers and they were awesome. I wish she could tell you that the seafood was good there but the truth is I don't know my kids raved about the clam strips.

We had never been to Ipswich and decided that we MUST have clams! My BF didn’t know if he like the “whole belly” or not, so they actually gave him a sample! Turned out he likes strips better. We enjoyed the fried clams, onion rings and oysters which were all amazing. I don’t know how they do it, but their onion rings (which I am generally not a fan of) are delicious. The onions are thick so you don’t feel like you are just eating fried crust! The oysters were juicy and clams delicious. A must visit spot for wonderful seafood!!

We ordered two hot buttered lobster rolls (each came with a bag of potato chips), clam strips, and two drinks. The lobster rolls were skimpy, not hot, and not buttered. The meat was totally bland and it definitely was not fresh. For close to $100 I personally expect more. This was our first and definitely last time eating at the Clam Box.

Outstanding like the kind of food you can’t stop thinking about!! I basically moved back to New England because no where else has fried clams I have tried so many places and yes changing that oil like they do makes a world of difference BUT YOU HAVE TO TRY THE GLUTEN FREE fried clams like seriously my grandson said they are way better than the regular ones because they are light and you can really taste the claim not just batter OFF THE CHARTS will go again and again !! As someone that frequents seafood spots up and down the coast of New England I have to say I was underwhelmed by the food. I chose the Clam Box because of their quintessential reputation and thought my children would enjoy the meal after a day at the beach. Literally everything we had, with the exception of the Clam Chowder, was bland. Scallops, full belly clams, fish, fries, onion rings, albeit fresh, tasted the same. My children are all in their 30’s and have grown up eating seafood, their opinions were the same. It was disappointing considering the hype.

I give this place props for historic merit, kind service, and I will concede that we should have tried the clams!! Instead, we got a sad lobster roll with chips, two fountain sodas, and a small box of rubbery scallops to the tune of $71! We waited in line for this, it was so lackluster we didn't even finish the food, lamenting as we tossed the remnants that we could have had a better shore dinner in western Mass. However, we can now say that we have visited this historic landmark, and, truthfully, we should have ordered the clams. I did enjoy the dining room, it has an old-fashioned charm.

Sometimes I forget what a difference there is from place to place for fried belly (or called native in Ipswich) clams…then I come here. And, yup, I really need to only eat fried clams here. The quality of the clams and how they batter and fry them is what makes them so, so good. I usually order a small box and that’s it. I sit in my car and enjoy. What I appreciate is that they included 3 containers of tartar sauce, which was really good. Plenty for a pint of clams. I also tried their clam fritter for the first time and it was wonderfully tender and tasty. It was a short wait on a Thursday early afternoon and the person who took my order was warm and friendly.
