"As Boston area transplants, my wife and I recognize authentic New England seafood when we see (and taste) it. In our opinion, the Old Port Lobster Shack delivers. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her fresh Maine lobster roll, prepared with real Hellman’s mayo just like they do back East. At first we thought it was a little pricey at $34, but a neighbor who just returned from Maine said that the going rate there is $30. Considering transportation costs for live lobster, this seems like a good deal. (FYI: The price fluctuates based on the market so you may pay more or less than we did Her mug of lobster bisque was flavorful but a bit too thick for her taste, although some people might prefer it that way. My fish and chips were terrific. There were three large pieces of perfectly cooked haddock, crunchy on the outside and moist and flaky inside, served with equally crispy and delicious fries. My meal was reasonably priced at $15.75. The Portola Valley location is small and very casual. Place your order at the counter, take your drink with you, and choose a table or picnic bench outside. There’s no indoor seating. They’ll deliver your food when it’s ready. The restaurant is conveniently located less than a mile from I-280 in the charming little Ladera shopping center. (Take the Alpine Road exit Westbound It’s hard to find a good casual fish restaurant on this side of the hill, especially one with a fresh authentic lobster roll, so we’ll definitely return when we’re in the area. As a footnote, we were surprised to see BBQ Brisket on the menu so we took home an order to give it a try. Big mistake! The meat was dry and flavorless and the sticky sweet sauce didn’t help. Barbecue is hard to get right. Instead of trying to please everyone, the “Lobster Shack” should stick to what it does best."

"A hidden gem, we stopped for lunch in a Wednesday and it was pretty busy. We got seated at an outside table where there was a nice view of the intercoastal and a pleasant breeze. Our server, Veronica, recommended the scooby treats and we ordered a bottle of albarino off their discounted wine list. The wine was excellent and went well with the delicious crab claws, they were so good my wife and I only got to eat one or two because my son devoured them while the other child gobbled up all the bread after dipping it in the crab butter. My wife and I both got the soft shell crab sandwich and we were delighted with how crunchy the batter was while the interior was soft and luscious. Probably the best soft shell crab I've had in many years! The kids shared the Coconut shrimp plate which was 7 extra large shrimp and we got 2 Mac and cheeses as the sides. The shrimp were very tasty, a nice and crunchy coconut batter covered the juicy shrimp magnifying the natural sweetness of the shrimp. Overall the food was really good, pleasantly surprised to find such good seafood a stone's throw away from all the tourist traps. And our server was what put it over the top. She was very attentive and full good recommendations, she also let us know they do tarpon feedings (unfortunately the fish weren't biting today but the kids did try). Truly a great experience, definitely worth a visit!"

"Haven't eaten here since their move from the off hwy. 101 initially only location a few yrs. ago (now they have two locations in RDWC). Wow, much has changed. I show up a few minutes before opening and walk thru the door. A guy in shorts and a Boston Bruins cap (assume he is the owner), looks at me like I'm a martian (which was a bit rude I know I'm early sir, so wise up? I tell him I'll wait outside/seating to give my order. He says no problem.Fifteen minutes goes by and no one comes out to take my order. I walk in again, someone/another customer is in front of me. You have to pay at the register 1st (apparently)? So, I order and pay for my food and patiently wait for it to be delivered. Which it was about 15-minutes later (which is OK, actually the best thing about my visit here). The waitress comes out to deliver my food. I ordered the appetizer fried clams (Boston-style clams), clam chowder and an iced tea. I specifically ordered non-sweet iced tea, which it wasn't. The fried clams were awful and it was a very small order (maybe 10 pieces? for $25? Don't come here for New England style fried clams. These were extremely greasy and fishy-smelling/tasting. I though they might make me sick but didn't. The clam chowder/white was OK but it was in a very small container/cup (maybe 3.5oz. at the most). For this meal, I paid just over $37 plus a tip. This place has changed for the worse. I will not return. Food was terrible, portions very small and price was off the charts. Service was just OK."

"I've been wanting to try this place for a while since the nearest Korean restaurant is down in Moore. I was excited because I look for any chance to eat Korean food--I'm half-Korean so I grew up on it. However, this is definitely not your mother's Korean food, this is fusion Korean food and once I sort of got that in my brain, I was able to enjoy the food. This is your typical hipster, modern, neo-cuisine type fare. Parking space is very limited but the inside is spacious and open. The menu itself is actually quite small. Very different from a normal Korean restaurant which would offer a very wide variety of dishes. Husband and I ordered the Galbi tacos as an appetizer. SO GOOD. I could order and eat this the rest of the night. $6 for two tacos was an okay price. The sauce on top was excellent and the meat nice and tender. My husband ordered the duck jook, a rice porridge with duck, topped with green onions and some chili oil. I actually liked his meal better than mine. I ordered soondoobu stew which is soft silken tofu in a spicy broth. I was expecting...well, not this. It's not that it wasn't good but it's not what I've had in mind. I felt there a distinct lack of flavor that I've found typical in Korean fare. There were little chunks of meat and even a raw egg--that itself turned me off because there wasn't anything in the description about it. But I mixed it in and the soup was hot enough to cook it. Problem solved. My main problem was this: if you're going to call it a Korean restaurant but you DO NOT offer side dishes, you're disregarding a large portion of what Korean food is all about. Typically, a Korean restaurant will offer 5-8 different side dishes to eat with your rice and soup but this place did not have that. I paid $2 to eat very fermented kimchi. I love fermented kimchi but something was off about this one. I don't know if they sped up the fermenting process or maybe this was a bad batch but even fermented kimchi will still have a nice crunchy bite to it. This did until...I ate a mushy piece. I'm talking no crunch and this felt certainly rotten. It turned me off from the entire bowl of kimchi, which made me incredibly sad. I found that I wasn't the only customer who was upset at the lack of side dishes. A table across from where my husband and I sat also asked their waitress for side dishes but was politely told they do not serve side dishes along with their meals but rather there was an option for "pickled vegetables" on the menu. Overall, don't go here thinking you'll have typical Korean fare. It's Korean in roots but with a different interpretation by Chae's owner and/or chef. If I chose to come back, I would try something else but only if."

"Shame on us for attempting Brewery treason and giving this place a second chance! We came into town hungry and thought that we would try Bear King again. (We tried back in 2020, however due to their pandemic procedures we only managed to have one beer each and no food. We entered around 1230 on a Saturday. It was reasonably busy, yet not full. We greeted the person who was standing behind the podium looking at their phone and waited for him to acknowledge us. We were then led outside, as requested, and the hostess was confused over which table to seat us at. Not the best start, however we were excited to sample the food. Once seated, we reviewed the menu and waited....... Twenty minutes or so later, with only the two bussers having made eye contact with us (to no avail as they obviously didn 't care about us either , other customers arriving and being served, waiters walking by avoiding us, we still sat there looking around us in the now rapidly depleting hope that someone would acknowledge us and... Nothing. At this point, it was a joke and we were only still here to see how long it would actually take to place an order! We finally decided to admit defeat so we went back inside where there was nobody to talk to. My husband walked around until he found someone (the initial staff member and let him know that we hadn 't been served. He asked where we were sitting, however did nothing to rectify the situation. He did offer an apology, however we were there for food! What a waste of our time again. We felt undervalued as customers. We were planning on ordering mimosas, beer, an appetizer and entrées. It appeared that Bear King did not need our money. We do not plan on trying for a third time. I have worked in the restaurant industry for many years and certainly expect more as a customer and a former member of the service industry. We ventured across the highway to our stable favourite Double Horn Brewing, where we received a warm welcome, prompt service and always excellent food and drinks, all whilst they were very busy! "Update: We 've since been here two more times, including today, when we walked out, despite the chuckles of the smug hipster at the register, as we left. Last time, we learned that their grossly overpriced condiments are store-bought and include GMO ingredients like High Fructose Corn Syrup. For a place representing themselves as a healthy option, they should know better than to secretively serve HFCS! Secondly, the fact that they have a Kids Menu presents them as being family-friendly but the raunchy, vulgar music they play gives the opposite message! The first time, the owner was present and kindly changed it. We haven 't been fortunate enough to see him there again. Today was especially bothersome, as we walked in to the entire restaurant smelling like a grease trap. It was comparable to the smell at a Burger King! After hearing the lyrics brag about strip clubs and lude acts, we decided we weren 't eating there. I get that this industry doesn 't exactly attract career-minded individuals but, at least a basic level of training and customer service is necessary. Note: Two stars is the minimum that Happy Cow will allow me to leave for a vegan establishment! Original Review: First, allow me to say that I 'm grateful I don 't live closer to this place or I 'd be eating there DAILY! For under $55, I was able to feed myself and four kids, including dessert for myself (I paid for theirs separately, after). We thoroughly enjoyed burgers, grilled cheese and a chick 'n sandwich with fries and onion rings, as well as a piece of peanut butter vegan cheesecake! My daughter 's devoured the onion rings with ranch while my teenager utterly destroyed the cowboy burger! My 6 year old said his was the best grilled cheese he 'd ever had! The customer service was wonderful, even graciously changing the music when an inappropriate song came on. I fully understand not hearing the music when you 're working with it on all the time but, their willingness to handle it quickly was much appreciated! I was a little thrown off by our dine-in order being packaged to go but, we made due and it worked out great! Their selection of dessert options was amazing and I can 't wait to return for a milkshake and the Sante Fe Wrap. They were out of avocado so I 'd decided to save the wrap for a future visit. I can 't wait to return!!! Updated from previous review on 2022-03-31"
