1865 Wine Cellar - Carte

I have been to this restaurant for birthday dinners two years in a row. Each time, I have had great meals. They have an excellent wine selection, well-prepared red dishes, and a nice ambiance. I would and have definitely come back.

The restaurant is good, but not great. Unfortunately, many dishes arrived cold (such as the pork belly in the amuse-bouche, scallop, duck breast, arctic char, and creme brulee) or overcooked (duck breast and arctic char). If these issues were fixed, the $70 prix fixe menu would be a solid value due to the quality of the ingredients and preparation.

My husband and I dined at this restaurant last night and we were very impressed with the food and service. We each ordered three courses and found that the portion sizes were more than generous. The steak was cooked perfectly and very flavorful. My husband enjoyed the fish dish he ordered as well. CONS The table was too wide to hold hands, the candles were not lit, there were no flowers present, the napkin folding needed work, and chairs should have been pulled out for guests with napkins placed across their laps. There was another female server with short hair who was interruptive and rude, grabbing wine right over our table without so much as an excuse me and treating other servers with disdain. The quantity of the bread/butter, cheese plate, and dessert was too small for the price. The main courses were bland. The bathrooms were on the opposite side of the resort. The restaurant was a bit cold to wear a dress, and the dress code was not enforced.

We were very disappointed with the food at this restaurant. The ambiance and wine selection were great, and the waitstaff was friendly. However, the quality of the food went downhill after the first small plate course. Two out of three main entrées were undercooked, with the ribeye coming out rare instead of medium. The lamb pieces were mostly fat, with only a small portion being edible. Despite having been there for over an hour and a half, we did not want to wait for the food to be fixed. The table next to us experienced the same problems with their meals, but after sending them back to be cooked more thoroughly and replacing the lamb, their meal improved. The setting is beautiful and the service was very good. However, I expected small portions but was still surprised at how very small they were. The dessert, albeit tiny, was delicious. The first two courses we had were decent but no better than what I typically cook at home, although I am an avid home cook. The introductory bread didn't seem fresh at all as it was chewy and tough. The worst part was the ribeye I ordered. It was not a ribeye. It was tasteless and had no fat whatsoever. It was an eye of round or some other lean and tough cut. This should be a crime in my book. We have stayed at the Mountain View Grand a number of times and love the resort. This stay, we were without the kids and decided to try the 1865 Wine Cellar. It was a mixed bag. Ambiance was great. Intimate tables set in a cozy wine cellar. Great lighting and as much wine as you could ask for. Server was nice. First complementary tasting dish, a small cheese filled cherry tomato with herbs, was amazing. Bread was okay. First appetizer, I got the scallop, it was great. My wife got the a broccoli dish and it was some shavings of broccoli (almost nothing) and cheese. We’re very familiar with chef table style restaurants and to be honest, our experience was pretty disappointing. We were back in NH for a short time from Maui to visit family. We gave up time with them to sneak up solely to try this eatery. Maybe we caught chef at an off night but it would be fair to say, we wouldn’t go back or recommend it to anyone. The 3 stars is for ambiance, gluten free options, and wine selection. The food was sub-par. We got there later in the evening and the waitress took our order, she never informed us that the main dishes we had wanted were sold out (duck and scallops) until 15 minutes after ordering.
