"Lost Post Alert: Today turned out to be a fantastic day after the tough one I had yesterday! My best friend and sister, Neaka Cook, is always calling me up with little adventures, whether it's picking up puppies or discovering new places to eat together as sisters, and I truly cherish that. Now, let’s get to the real highlight:
On Tuesday, she called me and said we were heading to Velma Jean's, a family-oriented restaurant owned by a Black family in Tylertown, MS. I was all in for that! Once we arrived, we were warmly greeted and led to our patio table by the wonderful owners, Bee Martinez and @Velma Jean's—some of the most hospitable, humble, and friendly people you could ever meet. It felt like going home for a family reunion, and this was our first visit.
The food was incredible! I had the chicken and waffles, and I couldn't even finish it all. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, and the waffle was moist and fluffy. I also tried Uncle Rick's Orange Dream Pop (or maybe it was soda), which tasted just like orange sherbet mixed with vanilla. My bestie ordered the Red Beans and Rice with Fried Chicken and cornbread—even though she's not usually a fan of cornbread, she loved it so much that she wanted another piece! She managed to demolish most of her meal and also enjoyed some strawberry lemonade and four mimosas.
Service was top-notch; our server was always around to make sure everything was perfect. We even had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Velma, and honestly, we could have sat and talked to them for hours! The atmosphere was amazing; it felt like a Sunday evening with family, surrounded by young and old folks sharing their stories from growing up. We definitely need more places like this!
We're excited to return, and next time I'll bring the kids! My best friend also got a take-home order, so I'm sure she'll share her thoughts on that as well. Oh, and we had cake for dessert—she enjoyed a piece of what I believe was sour cream pound cake and key lime cake. We still have the pound cake to try; I was too full from the earlier meal! Just a heads up, everything is homemade and cooked with tons of love.
@Bee Martinez, if I've got the names on the cakes wrong, please correct me! If you're ever in the Tylertown area, do yourself a favor and stop by Velma Jean's restaurant—I guarantee you'll love it; it's so homey!
