La Crosse, a vibrant city by the Mississippi River, offers classic Midwestern dishes like cheese curds and bratwurst, often enjoyed at local pubs and festivals.

"Update as of 2023 04 27 The skinny: Still a good place to go, just not as good as it once was. Since my previous review there have been some changes; most for the worse unfortunately. I have to drop at least one star off if not two. Change #1 Goodbye salad bar but hello side salad, or cottage cheese, or coleslaw etc. Just one is included with a standard entree. Want to have some cottage cheese along with your salad? Well you still can, but now it's an extra separate charge. Want a little pudding or pickled beets? Too bad; these were regular on the salad bar but went away with it. Change #2 Soup and salad (bar then just salad; see #1 were originally included with standard entrees. Now only one of the two is (your choice . It is an extra charge for the other one, but fortunately it's merely a $1 up charge. This is a negative of course but not massively so. Change #3 In my opinion, there has been on average a decline in service level. From my observations this seems to be due to a shortage of wait staff. That is to say that the wait staff on the whole range from decent to very good, but due to being stretched a bit thin they cannot deliver the same level of service as before; despite working just as hard if not harder. This is not a reflection on the wait staff. This may (or may not be in the court of ownership management. You can always get all the help you need, if you offer the right amount of compensation. However, if the amount of compensation required rises to such a level that it is financially counter productive to a business, then there's not a lot to be done for it. Change #4 The hours have been cut back. Originally BCD was open Thursday through Saturday nights. First Thursday service was discontinued. Then down the road Saturday was dropped too. So now to get the evening dining experience, it has to be a Friday night. Period. That's for you, me, and everyone else who wants to grab their supper at BCD, all concentrated into that one Friday evening each week. Remember point #3 above? Well guess what: you probably should prepare for waiting longer to be checked on by your wait staff during your visit. Also often times a long wait is in store just to get seated in the 1st place. Ownership management has stated this is due to shortage of cook staff. I don't doubt for a second the validity of that and I sympathize; but just the same the end result is their awesome Prime Rib now only available the one super busy night they're open. Bummer! Change #5 Prices have gone up; way up. Does it have to be that way? I don't know. Probably. They've gone up everywhere pretty much. And my oh my has beef gone up. Steaks and Prime Rib seem about DOUBLE what they used to be. Uhhg. Due to the expense we don't order that nearly as much, and it was one of BCD's main draws because the Rib is so good. So, that's my update for BCD. We still go there and like it, but we find ourselves going to other places instead more often now that are closer, sometimes cheaper, and equally as good. Pros: good quality food generous portions prices reasonable; not particularly cheap or expensive good service clean (are you paying attention Family Restaurant? Cons: can be pretty noisy when busy, more so than most due to poor harsh acoustics a little more out of the way for most people The pros and cons stack up such that we visit fairly often and recommend it!"

"I absolutely loved this restaurant! I had lunch with my teenage grandson yesterday and was really impressed with the menu selections. As a Weight Watchers member, I found this place to be fantastic for finding lean meats, fresh vegetables, and sauces, all prepared quickly. The first thing our server asked us was if we had any food allergies. I mentioned that I'm allergic to shellfish, and she went out of her way to provide me with a special colored bowl. This ensured that my food was cooked away from others being prepared at the same time. The service was outstanding, and I can't say enough good things about this place. I'm already looking forward to my next visit!"

"Le Chateau has a bar in the basement called La Cave. It has an amazing atmosphere. People are dressed from casual to formal. Anything goes. You enter by desending down a spiral staircase. The service is impeccable. Watching the bartenders make drinks was half the fun. The drink menu is very unique and was so good. You can get appetizers from the restaurant upstairs. We had the caramelized onion tart. It was a flaky puff pastry, topped with caramelized onions, confit tomatoes and chèvre. It was delicious! This is definitely on my must stop list when visiting La Crosse. The experience is so unique. You feel as if you are in Europe, not western Wisconsin. You won't be disappointed."

"We came here for Sunday brunch. Everything was wonderful. It was served family style. You could ask for more of anything you wanted. Fruit, pastries, eggs, sausages, bacon, steak, ham, turkey...there was a small buffet type line you could go up to at any time to have an omelette or Belgian waffle made. With the brunch you got a complimentary glass of champagne as well. There was also a large table of fabulous deserts. Our server was excellent. I would recommend checking this restaurant out!"

"Will you play some carryout order every Friday and when the call is answered they know who we are immediately. The fruit is prepared perfectly and when we go and pick it up there is absolutely no waiting it's ready to go immediately. Unlike Smitty's who we used to get our fish from because they're only three blocks away they can't seem to get the order right it's never ready on time. Hungry peddler is about 2 1/2 mi from our house and I can get down there and back home again in a faster time the food is correct it's always fresh and they care about their customers."

"Had a great time celebrating family milestone. 7 of us. Service was phenomenal. Appetizers and main courses excellent. They Were very helpful dealing with one in party with gluten sensitivity. However the desserts were quite disappointing. BlackBerry trifle was lousy. Creme Brulee was not set properly and bland. The key lime tart had crust as thick as filling. Not nearly enough filling but flavor not bad. Desserts kept this from a 5/5."

"Food not what it used to be. We were told new chef. Wedge salad had watery dressing not creamy like blue cheese. Few, if any, blue cheese crumbles. Pork chop was supposed to have peach bourbon dressing. It was very thin with no peach or bourbon taste. Not many customers there for a Saturday night. All in all a disappointment."

"Buzzard Billy's came recommended by the bartender at Pearl Street Brewery just up the road and boy did she know what she was talking about! From the time we walked in the door to the time we walked back out the door, the experience was top notch! Service was genuine, friendly and welcoming and the food was out of this world delicious!! Hubby had the Cajun Combo with the addition of dirty rice and he was blown away by all the flavors and portions! We've been to Louisiana and didn't have food this good, these folks totally know what they're doing! I had the Ca C'est Bon (Saw-Say-Bon) and I swear it was the best meal I've ever had in my life! The Cajun catfish is phenomenal and the sauce that the fried potatoes soak in is worthy of awards! The bread is a slice of heaven, all buttery and crunchy, fresh and soft but that corn... wow... what's with that corn... so good!! There are two other locations of Buzzard Billy's, both on our travel map journey if we're ever in the area. I sure hope we get back to this location some day because I will forever crave this meal!"

"My spouse and I dined at Pogreba, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in early May. Our entire experience was excellent, and we highly recommend Pogreba. They accept reservations for parties of two. Some of the other La Crosse restaurants do not. My spouse had the lamb wellington. The lamb was cooked perfectly pink, well seasoned, and the puff pastry was light and flaky. An excellent sized portion. The house salad was also excellent. My spouse was very happy with their selection. I had the Special, which was a red curry seafood with pasta dish it was out of this world. Chock full of scallops, shrimp and salmon, in a wonderfully creamy sauce that was seasoned perfectly, had a good depth of flavor, and served over pasta/noodles. Also a very generous portion I ended up taking leftovers back with me. I had the Caesar salad with anchovies, and that was yummy as well. For dessert, we shared the strawberry tiramisu, also a generous portion, and delicious just the right balance of sweet, but not overly sweet. Jenna was our server, and she was absolutely delightful professional, warm, welcoming, and friendly; and a joy to talk to. She checked on us often, as did a very nice hostess. We felt well attended to, the food was excellent, and the entire experience absolutely wonderful. We highly recommend Pogreba in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Next time we are in La Crosse, we will definitely return there."

"Since the restaurant was quite busy and doesn't take reservations, we started our evening at the bar. We enjoyed a phenomenal artichoke dip along with some wine while we waited. About an hour later, we were seated and immediately treated to warm bread and butter. For our main course, we all opted for the filet mignon accompanied by steamed squash for the evening's vegetable special. We also chose the autumn salad, although the salad bar, which looked fantastic, wasn't something we tried. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the squash was served with a delightful brown sugar sauce. To finish off the evening, we decided to sample three desserts: grasshopper cake, chocolate cream cake, and carrot cake. Overall, it was a lovely dining experience from start to finish, and I highly recommend giving this steakhouse a try if you're in the area."

"3/18/2022. My wife and I came to visit La Crosse to see Grandad Bluff and other stuff. Decided to eat at Golden Egg Rolls. Nice little place. When we got here, it was busy, they only had 2 servers/waiters but they both did great considering how busy they were. We order 2 Egg Rolls, Pho, and Pad Lad Nad. The egg rolls was okay, not bad, but nothing special about it. It was fresh and crunchy. From the photo, the sauce looks red, but in person, it actually has a pink hue to it, which reminds me of pepto bismal pink. The sauce isn't your typical egg roll sauce. It looks like a sweet and sour sauce, but to me it tasted bland with a after spice taste. You'll have to try it for yourself. The pho was nothing special, just a regular very light pho broth taste, nothing flavorful, it wasn't bad or good. The only thing was they do not have enough pho condiments at the tables for all the tables. After I was done using mines, they came and ask to take the ones on my table to give to the other tables. There isn't much table condiments to add to the pho(fried garlic, beef flavor paste, chili oil, hoisin sauce, siracha sauce). I've never been to a pho place that has beef flavor paste. My wife had the Pad Lad Nad. From the menu, it says dark brown peanut sauce, but the sauce looks lighter in color and there seems to be no peanut in it. Overall nice little place, service was great, food was okay, it fills your belly. I say the best food was the small seasame balls they were selling at the counter."

"I wanted to eat at the restaurant, but the air conditioning was so cold it felt like a meat locker. I decided to order my food to go instead. The waitress, Anna I believe, didn't seem happy about it. When she brought out our order, she mentioned they had run out of plastic silverware, which seems unlikely since they have a drive-thru window. My omelette was overcooked, and they served the bread without toasting it. We'll choose a different place for our next meal."

"This is a great bar! We sat outside on the patio because they are dog friendly. The fried pickles are nicely battered and well seasoned, with a homemade ranch that is delicious. The Howie's Cheesesteak was also very good and my wife really enjoyed her chicken wrap on a homemade tortilla. Our server Janessa was so kind and thoughtful to our dog. She brought out a water dish and we were able to get a burger patty for him $2). Thank you Janessa and Howies for a wonderful evening. Hope to be back in the area soon and come again."

"We enjoyed the food and experience at Piggy’s, but we are giving the restaurant a two because of the two parking tickets we received for parking across the street in a city lot. One ticket for parking without the app and another for vehicle backed into stall. Piggy’s should have a sign posted on their front door telling patrons not to park in the lot. This lot used to be owned by Piggy’s Restaurant and now a private lot supposedly owned by the City of La Crosse. Poorly posted sign and cannot see when it’s dark outside. The entire lot had tickets posted on the vehicles except for a few cars. That certainly is not helping their business and wonder if Piggy’s is receiving a cut from the city. Will not be eating at Piggy’s again anytime soon."

"Digger's Sting, is, by far the best Club to date. The service was top notch. Nick is definitely the best waiter we've had in a long time! We strayed from the traditional Old Fashion this trip. I went with the Digger's Margarita and it was an A+, Vince went with a Tequila Old Fashion and Mossy had the Whiskey Sour. The drinks and meal were amazing. The Filet was so tender and the Atlantic Salmon with Ginger Sauce was flaky and delish! It was hard to choose which was better. Kim had the prime rib and didn't say a word while she was eating it. That means it was great! Don't forget to try their mozzarella or jalapeno cheese balls or the amazing garlic toast, they won't disappoint. We finished off with a Tiramisu cake which Vince scarfed down so he didn't have to share and Mossy and I opted for the traditional Grasshopper (very filling but O so good! . We all highly recommend Digger's."

"I visit this place whenever I get the chance. The sandwiches are consistently bigger than I can finish in one sitting (which is perfect for a tasty treat later). The bread is delightfully crispy yet soft, and the ingredients are always fresh and generously portioned. And the soup... wow, it's amazing! I've loved every variety I've tried, and I've made it a point to sample them all. Thank you for that! For those who complain about the salad, remember: if you're at a taco place, don't expect to be able to order a burger! The soup and sandwich combo is what they do best, and they nail it every time! Plus, all of this for under $10—what more could you ask for?"

"Cute little neighborhood breakfast spot. We had chicken fried steak, and steak Benedict. The service was great, and even tho there was a wait we got in relatively quick. The food was ok, the chicken fried steak was really thick, and the breading was a little different tasting but good. The steak Benedict was good, again the meat was thick, lacked flavor. The mimosa?s are really tasty, and inexpensive. The art decor is very 80?s which we love!"

"I absolutely love the breakfast here! Although I am not the normal patron here, I am a huge fan of Kramer’s spicy breakfast burrito w/ the in-house ghost/reaper hot sauce. The sauce is so good and is STUPID HOT! I hear their “normal” breakfast is amazing as well."

"We had visited the Root Note a year ago and were pleased to find vegan options in such a small town. We planned a return visit despite it being a bit out of the way and the somewhat slow service. However upon entering this time I noted the change. Gone were the vegan options. Replaced with vegetarian friendly but very vegan unfriendly crepes. Thankfully their soup of the day was vegan that day but I definitely won't be going out of my way again. And my omni dining date didn't even enjoy his crepe. I am sad to see another vegan-friendly oasis in the land of dairy gone."

"a place to enjoy. service and atmosphere. great service from all employees. pleasant and helpful. the atmosphere was loud and busy being a Friday night. lots of space for big parties too small. environment and location. the place has character of windows inward. it was once the pearl street brewery location. the location is down town so parking might be limited and difficult to find, but many hotels close by. eating was surprisingly good. as only a little bit in the kitchen it was fast and tasty. the appetizer and flatbreads were perfect. the fact that they served to eat, until late is also so useful. the beverages boast endlessly a 400 piece of drinks list from local beer to beyond. tasty tasty things. a must stop."
