"I found myself in St. Louis overnight with a craving for calzone, and Dewey's Pizza was conveniently close to my hotel, so I decided to give it a try. The restaurant was quite busy when I arrived, but I was seated quickly in a welcoming atmosphere. I ordered a calzone with sausage, pepperoni, and mushrooms. Given the crowd, it arrived relatively fast, and it was enormous. The crust was perfect, and if you love mushrooms, you'd enjoy this calzone, as it was packed with them. However, there wasn’t much sausage or pepperoni.
If you're looking for a quiet dining experience, this is not the place for you. A table across from me was filled with a dozen teenage girls who spent their time taking pictures and screaming with excited delight as they passed their phones around. They registered about 90 decibels on my sound meter, and that's just what was detectable by the human ear. I'm pretty sure all the dogs in the neighborhood went deaf! I’d consider giving them another shot if I find myself back in St. Louis with a hankering for calzone.
**Update 02/20/2024**: I had another unexpected overnight stay in STL, so I invited a friend this time. Arriving in the early afternoon, I assumed it would be quieter than my last visit, where the table of teens really tested my decibel meter. This time, only about three or four tables were occupied. Unfortunately, a few of those had families with screaming toddlers. While that's not the restaurant's fault, the acoustics in that space caused the sounds to echo.
When our friendly server arrived, I mentioned that my previous calzone had been heavy on mushrooms but light on meat. She assured me she would take care of it. When my order arrived, she said, "Sausage, pepperoni, and light on the mushrooms, right?" That should have been a warning. The calzone was light on mushrooms, yet still lacked sufficient meat. I'll invoke my two-strike rule and pass on this place next time. It’s clearly popular, and the food is decent, but it’s not what I was after."
