"Gluten Free review This was my second time coming to Nick's. Both times, with perfect weather, we ate at the sidewalk tables. The first time was a year before on a Memorial weekend Sunday around 4 pm. The atmosphere was serene, where I enjoyed a bison burger (which they no longer have on the menu) on a GF bun, while my wife enjoyed her Southwest salad. We would have rated the experience a 4 or 5 at the time. This time, dining with my sister who is also a celiac, it was a Friday in late June around 5:30 pm. It wasn't difficult to find street parking within a block. We were seated right away. The atmosphere was substantially louder with frequent bus and large trucks passing on the street. They don't have a GF menu, but have marked dishes, on the regular menu, that are or can be made so. There were an adequate amount of choices, so the menu was not too hard to navigate. The GF brew choices were Prairie Path ale, Vander Mill spiced cider, and Angry Orchard crisp apple cider. My sister ordered the latter, while I the former. Our waiter was quick to point out Prairie Path is gluten removed, which I appreciated but already knew. It hasn't affected me in the past. We both got a full order of ribs asking for a center cut. Our waiter explained that they would use a commercial sauce, Sweet Baby Ray's, over ours. The fries are GF here, but I substituted sweet potato fries for $2 more. I asked if they had a honey mustard sauce instead of ketchup for them. They did and it went along better than ketchup, but it tasted closer to a Dijon mustard. We both asked for extra crispy fries, but neither came close to crispy. There was a lot of rib meat fell and it fell off of the bone, but they were just on the up side of done. The sauce helped with that, but we were somewhat disappointed that it wasn't a Nick's' recipe. The small ramekin of cole slaw was good (not too sweet/ not too vinegary) but not enough for this type of meal though it wouldn't take a whole lot more. For an inexpensive side dish (to make), it seems like they're cutting the wrong corners. After I finished my ale, at the waiters suggestion, I tried the spiced cider interesting. It has more of a flavor suited to the fall (cinnamon, pecan, vanilla see photo of the can) and was a bit of an odd match for the ribs. The golden ale or crisp apple cider were better pairings. I should also add that after our meal we were thirsty most of the rest of the evening. We were both too full to check out the dessert menu. All in all, though the ribs were a meh this time, I wouldn't hesitate to come back and try other items, because I sense it's a safe GF environment with knowledge staff, and I did have a more positive food experience on my first visit. However, I'll only dine curbside when there is less traffic."

"On two occasions, I ordered a medium rare Delmonico Ribeye steak and was served it blue rare instead. The first time, it upset my stomach all night and into the next day. The second time, I had to cook it myself in my home oven to bring it up to medium rare, which compromised the flavor. I called the restaurant while cooking the steak, but the hostess I spoke with did not offer any form of compensation or even an apology. I also tried their Lobster Shishito appetizer. The first time it was fantastic, but the second time, a few months later, it was disappointing—the batter was so thick that there was more batter than lobster meat, with some bites containing only batter. Then there’s the Saturday night Prime Rib special. I ordered the end cut but was served a regular cut instead. By this time, I had learned to expect mistakes, so I checked my order before heading home. Sure enough, they had made an error, so I returned to the restaurant. The hostess and a male staff member, whom I believe was a manager due to his attire, took my order from me without saying a word and walked to the kitchen. There was again no apology or communication during this interaction. I stood awkwardly by, waiting for them to correct it, which they did, but it was still a very uncomfortable experience. I am appalled by the lack of service and the poor attitudes at Sophia Steak. It seems that staff members choose which customers to treat nicely, which is unacceptable behavior. Additionally, I’ve noticed a troubling pattern where non-white customers are sometimes treated as if they are merely delivery drivers instead of patrons, which has been commented on by other reviewers. I have never experienced such discrimination in any other restaurant in the area aside from Sophia Steak, and it's not isolated to their Wilmette location; I've seen similar issues at their Lake Forest restaurant as well. On another occasion, I ordered my usual Prime Rib end cut, but it arrived overcooked, tough, and lacking in marbling. The meat was so dry it could be shredded, making it hard to believe it was USDA Prime rather than Choice due to its lack of marbling and dryness. When Sophia Steak gets it right, it truly is one of the best restaurants in the area. But when they get it wrong, don't expect any compensation or even an apology. Here’s a tip: always check your order before leaving, as half the time they mess it up. Service: Takeout Meal Type: Dinner Price per person: $50–100 Food: 2 Service: 2"

"This place is just terrible. Every time I tried to buy something at the bakery I had to wait forever and ever for no reason there's no one there and no one knows the prices of any of the items. The last couple of times I waited so long I had to give up. The service is slow at the table as well, and the servers are entitled. The food is very small portioned and very blunt. One must be very unexposed to think this is a good Italian restaurant. Do yourself a favor and drive somewhere else with real options. THIS IS NOT a good Italian restaurant. This last part is added in response to the owner's post: I see from your response that you care about your business.ypi should know that my review is based on several visits over the last few years. Each time I thought I'd give it another chance and another chance and each time it disappointed. People who work at the bakery/market counters should know the prices or should be able to get an answer. I was left standing there for very long time until I gave up in the last two visits. No restaurant or market or any business should be confusing for its own personnel to the point that an answer can't be obtained. I understand that people that work for you have been with you for a very long time and I appreciate you valuing them but there is need for adjustment to the new times. This is not old Europe it's new world that evolves each day to better customer service and a model that works not confuses anyone. I hope you take the time I spent and the input as value to your need for improvement."
