"We came in with 4 people on a Thursday night. Super friendly staff and our pick of tables, although there were several filled with diners having aninated conversations. The heavy wood furniture and dark interior make you feel contained and cozy there is a projector with low volume sports running on one wall. Our waiter was very helpful and had some funny (well practiced) waiter jokes. The menu is ten pages with photos and dish names in cyrillic, with English translations. I suggest ordering multiples plates and eating family style to get to try more of what they offer. A few tables nearby did this and we did as well, at first not wanting to commit to an unfamilar dish... but after the apps wanting to trt a bit of everything. We had a tomato and goat cheese dish (forgot to take a picture) that the waiter drizzled in olive oil and pepper creamy and bright and very tasty. We had potato croquettes with dill yogurt and fritters with berry jam excellent little apps to share. Then we ordered chips hand sliced potato fried and topped with chopped garlic and herbs, next to the meat tray for 2 coiled homemade sausages, pork, chicken kebabs... delightful. Very flavorful and moist meat and the bit of fries on the edge of the platter were quite good too. We all shared a slice of fig and marscapone cake and divvied up leftovers. Best part: VERY welcoming Chicago prices at about $40 per person with tip. Give this place a try. Park in the auto repair lot liquor store lot next door, but don 't park directly in front of the liquor store. Also there is a sign near the yellow awning that says certain spots in the strip mall lot are OK for Mehanata parking. Mehanata is a delightful Bulgarian restaurant featuring charming ethnic decor and a range of authentic Bulgarian dishes. I want to emphasize that the presentation of the food feels more homemade and traditional compared to what you might find in an average restaurant. During our visit, we sampled their cold soup, Tarator, as well as the Shopska salad and Combo Shashlik. I particularly appreciated the way the shashlik was presented on skewers, and the meat was both juicy and tender.

"I made reservations for this restaurant about a week and a half ago prior to my boyfriend’s birthday. My only special request was that I get a surprise dessert for his birthday. Upon walking into the establishment, the host ruined the birthday surprise by saying happy birthday…But that was fine. We went, sat down and ordered our food. The food was great, however, our waiter (TAYLOR) was not very attentive to my reservation. After we ate, we sat and waited for about minutes before the waiter decided to Ask if we wanted a dessert menu, when I requested a surprise. I was already upset at that point, because sitting there, I saw very nice desserts beautifully garnished coming out for other birthday recipients around us. When the waiter came back out to ask what dessert we wanted, I told him he basically ruined the desert surprise. He apologized and went to get a slice of pie with three candles on a separate plate (why couldn’t we get the style of desert we were seeing other patrons receiving I cried at the table. The waiter came back accompanied with another waiter. He then proceeded to to sing the STEVIE WONDER VERSION OF HAPPY BIRTHDAY SOLO TO MY BOYFRIEND (yes, we are BLACK). I find that very offensive, seeing as how the Caucasian waiter followed up by saying “I don’t know that version”… My boyfriend called the waiter up jokingly after seeing about waiters sing happy birthday to another patron… so the waiter goes back to get a group of waiters to sing a better version of happy birthday… ONLY FOR THEM TO NOT KNOW HIS NAME! THE AWKWARD SILENCE WAS VERY DISTURBING!!! We left very offended."
