"My family and I showed up about 40 minutes before closing time this week. We had no idea what place in town would be good for a reasonable lunch, but this little bitty place had a comfortable look to it, so in we went. Four tables, six seats at the counter, plus some outdoor seating. One table was empty, thankfully, because I'm not sure I trust my 4 year old on a spinning counter stool. No worries. Menus were dropped off with a caution that they were out of cole slaw, and they don't have soup. No problem. Unfortunately, they don't have any child-sized dishes either. But there were plenty of lunch options on the menu, and for a small diner in a resort town, I was pleasantly surprised by the prices on the menu. As in, it's been ages since I've seen an open-faced hot roast beef sandwich for less than $10. So I gave that a try, we ordered a grilled cheese sandwich for our boy, and my companions opted to split a grilled Rueben. Here's where I was concerned: with prices as low as they were, I was a little concerned about portion size. I would not have been surprised to find these sandwiches to be smaller than typical. No worries. The Rueben came out, already split on two plates, with the fries split between plates as well, and what we could only guess was a free extra side of tuna-mac salad so they weren't splitting a side. The roast beef sandwich was better than usual deli roast beef, sliced thin and piled on two sliced of bread and covered with a good amount of beef gravy that was (SURPRISE) not overly salty. Very nice indeed. Our boy ate 3/4 of his grilled cheese, which is a good sign for that one. Both halves of the Rueben disappeared quickly. By the time we finished, the waitresses were cleaning up around us, and the kitchen crew had called over to make sure it was safe for them to shut down the grill and clean up. All of this politely and with a bit of joking around. They were friendly, and their choice of music in the diner was excellent. Speculator isn't a town we visit often, as in, this is the second time I've been there after a work visit six years ago. But if we find ourselves back in town, we know where to stop again."

Got bought by Camp-Of-the-woods member. Prices doubled. Place is terrible and the town is getting ruined. No longer a Classic diner with Reasonable prices. Go someplace else. View menu

We visit the area once or so a year and always enjoy a good cup of coffee, the friendly service and the food. It 's the cheers of dinners in the neighborhood, everyone knows your name.

This was a nice diner! My group all got breakfast and it was great. The food was tasty, fast, and filling, and the staff were nice. I have to give a particular shout out to the toast, eggs, and bacon not being overdone as that's a big diner pet peave. It's not gourmet (though it's no hole-in-the-wall either). It's everything a diner needs to be!

"My entire immediate family visited for the weekend to hold a memorial for my grandfather, who loved this place in Speculator. We had arranged our dinner for May 5 and communicated with the restaurant to ensure everything would go smoothly. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by our waitress. After being seated and placing our orders, things took a turn for the worse. Our waitress returned to inform us that they didn’t have enough food available for our orders, even though we had emailed the owners our selections months in advance. When we asked to speak with the manager, our waitress, Liz, told us she was the manager. When we asked how we could resolve this issue, she simply replied, “I really don’t know.” While some of us were receiving our drinks, one of them contained a hair—this was not just a strand but was tangled in the garnish. We kindly returned the drink, and after 30 minutes of waiting, the staff still struggled to figure out our orders. When the salads finally arrived, it was complete chaos; no one knew who ordered what, and several people received the wrong dishes. During this turmoil, the owner's husband came out, behaving inappropriately. He yelled at us, saying, “Look, he has no hair,” and then accused us of deliberately putting hair into our drinks and salads, despite the hair not matching the individuals who received those items. As our frustration mounted, one family member inquired whether the kitchen staff was wearing hairnets and complying with health regulations, but no answer was given. To make matters worse, as another member of our party was leaving, they overheard Liz announcing in the lobby, “I am going to punch this guy in the face.” At this point, it was utter chaos. The owner's husband, who had been seen outside drinking earlier, came in yelling at us, saying he didn’t know what to do and that we should have ordered from the menu—something we had asked to do earlier but were told was not an option due to our large party. Ultimately, we decided to leave. As we exited the restaurant, the owner and someone who appeared to be his son continued to speak down to us and yelled for us to leave, threatening to call the sheriff. In summary, I am truly saddened for Melody Lodge; I don't see its future being bright unless significant changes are made. This experience was completely unprofessional, rude, and disorganized. Our family felt verbally abused and even threatened. I'm very upset about this."
