"We expected a more traditional American BBQ experience at The Surfing Pig Hawaii, but were surprised by their unique twists. Personally, I wasn't a fan of the rack of ribs due to the fennel seasoning, though I can see others who enjoy fennel appreciating them. While the flavor was decent, the meat was only slightly tender—not falling off the bone, but not overly tough either. Unfortunately, the brisket was quite dry, with just a small drizzle of sauce on each slice. However, the side of mashed potatoes that accompanied it was excellent. We really enjoyed the pappardelle, which had the perfect pasta texture and was full of flavor. The mac and cheese was quite different from the traditional version—we found it more like a tomato pasta with a lot of cheese, creating a rose sauce. The pork belly appetizer was on the smaller side, and while it was crispy, I wished it were juicier. The loco moco was average; we opted for regular fried rice instead of the usual Sriracha fried rice, but the fried rice had a strong flavor that overpowered the meat and gravy. The meat itself was a bit bland, and the egg was overcooked, leaving no runny yolk. I also wished the gravy had more seasoning, as there was a prominent mushroom taste, which I’m indifferent about. The coleslaw was too vinegary for our taste, but their corn was good for corn lovers, and the brussel sprouts were very well seasoned and cooked. The truffle fries were crispy and enjoyable. Overall, the experience felt a bit pricey for the portion sizes, giving it more of a fine dining atmosphere than a casual BBQ vibe. While I wouldn't mind returning for the pastas and brussel sprouts, I'm not sure I'd come back for anything else on the menu.
