"I can't believe I’m seeing negative reviews about this place. My father used to come here when he was in college, and he brought me for the first time 10 years ago. Since then, it has been my favorite sushi restaurant, and I’ve recommended it to everyone who visits New York—and it has never let me down. The quality of the food has remained consistently exceptional; I’ve never left Yama feeling that the quality was any different from my previous visit. When I lived in the city, I used to go every couple of weeks, and now that I live abroad, I always make sure to come back whenever I visit (sometimes even 2-3 times in one trip!). I often find myself wishing I could enjoy Yama more often; it has been a part of my life for so long, and it truly feels like a treasure. The restaurant is so unique, and the food is incredible—it’s an absolute must-visit. I honestly believe it’s even better than Blue Ribbon, Nobu, or other overpriced sushi spots. My favorite dishes are the mango sushi roll, nasu shigayaki, and their miso soup, which is fantastic. I always joke that if Yama ever closed, I would be in mourning… I would choose Yama any day and highly recommend stopping by this amazing restaurant whenever you're in New York."

Good food. Terribly rude, mean staff. Tiny and cramped, dirty. Never ever again!!

Fresh and consistent sushi. Outdoor seating is nice, indoor seating is bleh. Mostly do takeout but love this spot.

This place is going down so badly. The staff is rude. This is now the 3rd time they won’t take orders after 9:15. The food use to be amazing too. It is terrible.

This is a classic sushi restaurant known for its generous portions of incredibly fresh and delicious sushi and sashimi. My only minor complaint is that the decor hasn’t changed in 30 years; it could use a makeover, though that might also be part of its charm. I highly recommend trying the special rolls!

I been here since 1992, due to my moving, I haven’t been here since 2013, today I finally come back to this used to by my most loyal Japanese Restaurant, but seem like the owner had been changed (not sure) all the decorations are kinda outdated and need to come renovation, fish are still fresh, but a bit thinner compared to the past. Good quality fish/tasty, but expensive prices, rude service, and a dingy restaurant aesthetic. I live nearby and have been a couple times recently. I paid almost fine dining prices to eat in a dingy basement served by an apathetic server. I felt nickle-and-dimed when on the second visit, I asked for no fish egg (roe), and they upcharged $4 for the change. Kotobuki and Sugarfish are other options to consider.

Unfortunately, it seems Yama has lost its touch! This long-standing spot on Irving Place has been a favorite for years, but the sushi has become quite expensive and is no longer as exceptional as it once was. I’m disappointed to report that the quality has declined, and there was also an unpleasant odor in the back room. It breaks my heart to write this! I used to adore this place and I probably have a glowing review from a decade ago…

"We went to Bread N Wine on a early Saturday afternoon for brunch. We were greeted and seated by the servers who were attentive. The food was okay the bread was really soft and fresh. My partner got the French Lentil Soup, Spinach and Tomato Egg Bake andI got the French onion soup, egg omelette with spicy tomato avocado and onions. I wasn 't happy with my omelette because thespicy just meant it was covered in hot sauce within. For beverages, we got chai lattes (we later found out it wasn 't tea basedbut rather coffee) and we had the option of oat milk, almond milk or regular milk. In terms of our overall experience we feltby the end too many things were steering the experience south; the worst was when we were accused of using counterfeit money topay for the tip. There was no special marker used to prove that the money was counterfeit or technology to back up this claim. That experience alone left a bad taste in our mouth as we left embarrassed by that claim, kind of shook from that, we stilladded the tip to our credit card 18%. As we walked out and talked about how weird that was, the owner of the business nextdoor overheard us and asked to see the $20 bill he showed us that our money was real and validated what we knew, that themoney wasn 't counterfeit. When we went back into Bread N Wine to discuss this there was no apology, just well, it felt thatway , shrug. It left a terrible feeling. We would not go back after that, this is not how you treat customers from start tofinish, hence the 2 star review."
