"A review by Dr. Joseph Suglia Café Deko lives up to its name. It is very much a Viennese late nineteenth-century art-deco café that has been transplanted, through the magic of time-transport, into the Chicago of the early twenty-first century. The style of the décor is pure Jugendstil. Bronze monkeys clamber up the walls, bearing illumined lightbulbs as if they were lanterns guiding visitors through its space. The paintings resemble Beardsley. The walls invoke the junglescapes of Henri Rousseau. Lush, luxurious foliage emblazons the space—both real luxuriating green plants and figures of luxuriating green plants. When we walk into Café Deko, we remember that Vienna is a cosmopolitan, international, trans-European city, one of the first cities of modernity. But this is no museum—this is a living, lively, lifeful space, with more university-students than at a Taylor Swift concert. The sandwiches are among the best I have ever gustated. Particularly, the Caprese Sandwich, with its generous heaps of cherry tomatoes, which is trilled with just-enough olive-oil. Every time I attend Café Deko, I order the London Fog. The London Fog is the signature potation, with its clouds of milk and caffeine. It keeps me alert, but it is neither sweet nor bitter. It has an exquisitely subtle elegance. The proprietor and proprietress of Café Deko are George and Karol, two of the most pleasant hosts and hostesses you will ever meet. There are only three rules of conduct, as far as I can tell: 1. Do not dispose your feet upon the furniture. 2. Do not eat drink outside food beverage within the café. 3. For God’s sake, order something while you are there! Why everyone does not follow these rules is a mystery to me. The host and hostess are very gracious and gently remind those who infringe these rules what the rules are. They are much nicer than I would be in their place. Café Deko is one of my favorite spaces in Chicago, alongside the Shedd Aquarium and a few other spaces. Unlike the Shedd Aquarium, there are no children swarming the space, ready to bite my ankles like so many piranha. There is nowhere else like it, now that Vienna has become a postmodernist city. Instead of traveling to Vienna, I will continue to attend Café Deko and move back into the joyful and vibrant nineteenth century while I am remorsefully marooned in the twenty-first. I ordered an iced latte with sugar free vanilla syrup. It was smooth tasting but could not taste too much of the espresso. Atmosphere is welcoming. View menu

I tried their Tiramisu Latte, and it was absolutely delicious! I would highly recommend it. The place has a lovely atmosphere and decent wifi. However, it can be difficult to find a table, so I wouldn't count on being able to sit down and work there.

The atmosphere here is so clean and cozy, and the baristas are very friendly. I was thrilled to find out they serve cappuccino freddo, which I hadn't had since my trip to Greece, and it was just perfect! I also appreciate that they ask if I’d like cinnamon.

Cafe deko One of the better cafes that I’ve tried in chicago! I think the ambiance is very unique and nice. I think this would be a great WFH spot. I love that they have a drive/walk through window! I’ll definitely be back to try out some pastries/more coffee! View menu

This charming corner café is perfect for coffee lovers! The brew is strong and delicious, making it great for a sit-down chat or for quietly working on some art or a project. They offer a selection of small snacks as well. The staff is professional, polite, and very welcoming.

Was visiting Chicago and found this place online. Cool atmosphere however the service I experienced today was very disappointing. I ordered pick up iced coffee and when I tasted my coffee it needed more flavor. I waited right there seeking assistance and the cashier took 5-6 customer orders without acknowledging me at all. Then finally gave me the time of day. This made me feel like my order didn’t matter or satisfaction of my coffee wasn’t important to the business. Won’t be returning after this experience.

"Tempesta is arguably one of the best sandwich shops in the city. They make a lot of their meats in house and use high quality ingredients so you know you’re getting the good stuff. Not only can you get a great sandwich, you can purchase most of their meats to go as well as other small artisanal grocery items. I have tried almost every sandwich they have on the menu but my top two choices would be the #1 The Dante and the #2 Yo! Vincenzo! The Dante is their version of a classic Italian sandwich but a bit on the spicier side. The Yo Vincenzo is a chicken parm and I personally think it’s the best chicken parm sandwich in the city. The chicken is perfectly crispy, and they use just the right amount of sauce where it doesn’t get soggy. Both of these sandwiches come on their fresh baguette which helps set them apart from other sandwich spots in Chicago just because of how good it is. The B Franklin is also a great option, and if you’re starving get the Wagyu Pastrami but be warned it is a very heavy sandwich because of that Wagyu. The last pro tip I’ll add in here is order your sandwich ahead of time if you’re doing takeout. This is a very popular spot and is always busy during the lunch rush so if you wait to order until you arrive you may need to wait for 10-15 minutes. That should speak to how good this place is because it’s in such high demand, so if you’re in Chicago make sure you stop in!"
