"I had not been to this restaurant before and reserved an evening for our CIO Staff of twelve. I was pretty disappointed at the run down décor right away. Shutters in the middle of the room and a picture frame over a mirrored wall were odd amongst other things not the ambiance for "fine dining". The appetizers (calamari and chili prawns) were fine. Our waiter, Michael, kindly separated a salad into two plates as two of us were going to share it. I ordered the Filet Mignon which came with mashed potatoes and asparagus. I asked for the Filet to be medium well and to exchange the asparagus for green beans. However, I was plated with asparagus, green beans and no mashed potatoes and my filet was very well done. As Michael did not come back to check on our meals, I went forward with eating my overcooked filet. Eventually we saw Michael again and I informed him of the mishaps of my meal. I would expect the waiter to catch this, especially for a "fine dining" restaurant. tip was automatically included. I did tip an extra to make it Maybe that was because Michael kept pouring the wine! I don't see a reason why I would go back here"

Wonderful dining spot, but it's unfortunate that it's closing down soon.

The food was great, but the service was slow. Our service has forgotten our starter order, even if we asked him twice.

The service was slow, but food was decent. There was too much sand in the clams! It was nice to eat there one last time before they close next week!

As always, the restaurant was great, but unfortunately they closed on December 22, 2017 after 35 years. We will miss this place and the staff. Best of luck to everyone!

I'm sorry to close Lion and Compass. We were part of a group, all enjoyed their meal. The drinks were good. The waiting staff was very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly to meet our needs without being intrusive. View menu

My favorite find of long recent. Excellent, diverse, creative, yet solid menu. There is certainly some beneath-the-surface history to the place. Think Narnia meets the masons, but whimsical. Loved it. Not cheap, but worth every penny

First time and there will not be a return. Super slow service (we were at nearly hour before entrees showed up; when they did for our table of person did not get a plate-for another minutes. Another steak was completely overcooked and had to be returned It was a business dinner the noise was fine but hours for mediocre food was well below expectations

"Great place, great food. My family and I go here regularly as the rest of them are vegetarian. Merit successfully breaks the stereotype that vegan food protein is missing, and that the only thing that vegans eat is salads and is hands down one of the best restaurants in Santa Clara County. Food: I had most of their menus and it never disappointed me. The variety of specials they always leave something new to try to bring me back. Some of their dishes lack gravity and can be very dry, so if you order more than one dish, make sure that at least one engraving has. My favorites are the Spicy Delight and the Golden era, of which I would highly recommend to get if you have never before in Merit. Your desserts are all milk-free and ice-free, but you really can't say it; my vegan dessert exploits cannot hold a candle to the cakes they bake. However, they are frozen and in a refrigerator in the dining area that I really do not like to see, but at least they are open about it. Service: Service is always fast and all service employees are familiar with the menu. All waiting times are reasonable and I have never been hungry to regret the waiting period. Staff really try to help what I can't say about many of the restaurants I was. The ambience: nothing to complain. Everything is well lit, and there is always enough room to eat. Overall: If you are looking for a vegan restaurant that is slightly different than usual, or just a good restaurant in general, Merit is and always at the top of my list!"
