"I first went to the Old South Mountain Inn when I was about 10 years old and my dad and I were section hiking the Appalachian Trail in the late 1980s. I remember the food to be really good. I have been a few more times over the years but my wife and I at there this past weekend. The staff was welcoming and friendly. The service was good not great. The food was lacking in some areas. I had the cream of crab and my wife had the lobster bisque. The cream of crab was pretty good. A little runny for my taste but it was good. I did not like my wife 's lobster bisque. It just tasted a little off but not bad. For entrees, I ordered the Rockfish Chesapeake and my wife ordered the Sirloin, medium rare. My entrée came with mashed potatoes and a salad. My wife 's came with a salad and a baked potato. The salad was good but the plates were too small to mix the salad with the dressing without making a mess. My mashed potatoes were good. The Rockfish Chesapeake left a lot to be desired. I could not taste the crab, the fish was rubbery on the sides, and it lacked taste overall. I would not order it again. My wife 's sirloin was unevenly cooked. It was medium to almost well done. The meat was choice or maybe even select with a fair amount of gristle. I realize sirloin is a tougher cut with less marbling, but I was unimpressed with the steak when I tried it. Maybe this meets the grade of fine dining in the Boonboro area, but not in the places we usually dine for a special night in Northern Virginia/Washington, DC. If you have dined at Minibar, Plume, the Dabney, or the Inn at Little Washington, you will be disappointed. I would equate the food we were served to what I would expect from a Sizzler or Pondarosa. The next time I am in the area, I may go back but will likely find somewhere else to eat in Frederick, Boonsboro, or Thurmont. Maybe in another 10 years (about how long it has been since I had last dined at the Old South Mountain Inn), I will go back."

Prices are a little high for the quality of the food, but the waiter was amazing, and the ambiance was nice for a date. I loved to hear about the history as well; it was my first time there.

we had a fantastic dinner and a wonderful service. my rockfish was delicious, and his fillet mignon was excellent. compliments to the cook! the parmesan pfefferminz dressing brought all the aromes of the salat. recommend the torte and the chocolate godiva cake. if they have not been in old south mountain inn or have not been there lately, they make plans to do so soon!

Not a good experience on our last visit after Thanksgiving . Was there to celebrate birthday's- mine and my wife's with my family. Steak was over done and tough. Meatloaf was tasty but not warm. Had a great meal two weeks before on a Saturday. Been going there for a long time. Left a message with the owner after explaining our experience with the host. Never heard from him. View menu

The oldest restaurant in Maryland: 1732Great food and service. We started with oysters and French onion soup which were very good. Then we ordered duck and salmon. My wife does not eat butter and they made her order with olive oil instead. Food was tasty and Serving size was good. Our sever (Karen) was very caring and helpful. We are planning to visit again and try other options.I do recommend this restaurant.

only in the average. they try to be an upscale restaurant, but fail. I had the crabcakes that had potential. they were full of lump meat, had no filler, but unfortunately they were boring. it was necessary to season. husband didn't have the act so great. the worst part is that they want to impress and then serve an salate that is obviously bagged. there are so many farms in the opposite that I can't believe they can't find a new cure. on a positive note our server was very nice.

from the beginning, the bartender would not sit us in the historical side of the building, only the buffet room because of the staffed, literally five meters away. Oyster Night seemed great until it got out because that was a priority, no hours are posted everywhere while we started, we are asked if we want to dinner or dessert because at 8:30 a.m. it is time to close. did I mention that the bar was lively so that it didn't go to the end? suppe was luke warm bisque had rohe twee, bad was disgusting dirty. dad said that this was the place that was unfortunately decades ago, it is a scandal only 10 minutes from middletown on a beautiful mountain, they have a great place, management has it wron... very disappointed with the old south mountain once a family favorites for all celebrated at ostern. we had to wait 15 20 minutes on our reserved table and wait for an hour for our meals. two of us have ordered the main rib, one of us rare and the other medium rare. both come well done and dry. Moreover, they were about 1/3 of a customs thick. definitiw not worth $42 per piece. it was bad eating. their excuse? we were the last seats of the day. we sent them back and ordered steaks. I rarely ordered my medium and it came near raw, since it was half an hour until then, I ate it. the fish of my daughter was not good either. mushy. desserts were good. I ordered limoncello (which is a vodka-based...

This restaurant hits the mark with every visit. My first experience was almost a decade prior, and the warmth of that initial impression is still etched in my mind. To include my most recent visit, we were welcomed by joyous employees to a cozy and comfortable dining room. Our server was friendly, down to earth, and knowledgeable about the food. By the end of the meal he was less of an employee and had become more of a welcomed addition to our party. In this visit I enjoyed the prime rib, an old fashioned, and a few items from my party's plates. Not to be mistaken with dissatisfaction, my old fashioned was standard. While I enjoyed it, the caliber of the rest of the food put my cocktail to sh...
