"Definitely worth stopping for food on the go. We arrived a little before 8pm. It’s a market that is part of a gas station. They have a steady stream of customers coming from the deli section. They have a large selection of deli food. No pizza left and probably a good thing as they are kept in a glass case on the counter. We were curious about the soup and chili but were too tired to inquire. We opted for 2 subs, a hamburger and grilled chicken sandwich. We were lucky as they closed the grill after us. The subs were fresh and generously portioned. We thought $12.99 each was a bit pricey until we got the subs – they’re like 2 large sandwiches. The hamburger was made exactly as we asked – plain. The grilled chicken was prepared well. Don’t get me wrong – this isn’t gourmet food but it’s solid deli food. The staff was very nice and we were happy to find a good place to eat."

We stopped here for a sandwich, sub and snacks on the 4th. They were so friendly and the sandwich and sub were delicious.

It’s a bustling spot, but the food is served quickly and tastes great. I recommend placing your order by phone before you arrive.

Great deli and grille options, and a great staff if you give ‘em a little love! Ask Chad how he’s doin’ and he’s sure to give you a smile. I’ve been there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Ask about the soup. View menu

I only pass through Speculator once or twice a year, but I have to say this is arguably the best place to stop. They make the best chicken fingers I’ve ever had, hands down. They are always fried to perfection and absolutely delicious!

Our first stop here was out of necessity we had a long drive and badly needed fuel. While there, we decided to grab sandwiches and were pleasantly surprised. Now we plan a stop there while traveling and it's a welcome stop indeed. We've enjoyed both breakfast and lunch at the picnic table and my only complaint is not seeing a moose. :

My husband ordered a burger, and I chose a fried chicken sandwich. To my surprise, the sandwich, which was priced at $10.99, turned out to be a frozen processed chicken patty that they simply fried. The onions were fresh, but I had to remove the wilted shredded lettuce. And, to top it off, my sandwich was missing the cheese I had asked for. While it was tasty, I definitely don’t think it was worth $11. It does seem like regular customers are treated with more warmth, but I personally will be steering clear of this place in the future. The bathroom was in a terrible state. I can't understand how it could be so dirty. There was water all over the floor, and the toilet paper, hand towels, and soap dispensers were completely empty. As a result, the rolls of toilet paper and paper towels that were lying around were all damp. You would expect a charming little mountain store to be a pleasant place to visit, but it was quite the opposite. When I ordered a sub, I got the impression that I was bothering the two young employees working there. The cashier wasn't much better. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience!

We decided to go with two subs, a hamburger, and a grilled chicken sandwich. Luckily, we got our order in just before they closed the grill. The subs were fresh and generously sized. Although we thought $12.99 each was a bit steep at first, we were pleasantly surprised to find that they were like two large sandwiches in one. The hamburger was prepared just as we requested—simple and plain—while the grilled chicken sandwich was well made. To be clear, this isn’t gourmet cuisine, but it’s solid deli fare. The staff was very kind, and we were glad to discover a good spot to grab a meal.

"My family and I showed up about 40 minutes before closing time this week. We had no idea what place in town would be good for a reasonable lunch, but this little bitty place had a comfortable look to it, so in we went. Four tables, six seats at the counter, plus some outdoor seating. One table was empty, thankfully, because I'm not sure I trust my 4 year old on a spinning counter stool. No worries. Menus were dropped off with a caution that they were out of cole slaw, and they don't have soup. No problem. Unfortunately, they don't have any child-sized dishes either. But there were plenty of lunch options on the menu, and for a small diner in a resort town, I was pleasantly surprised by the prices on the menu. As in, it's been ages since I've seen an open-faced hot roast beef sandwich for less than $10. So I gave that a try, we ordered a grilled cheese sandwich for our boy, and my companions opted to split a grilled Rueben. Here's where I was concerned: with prices as low as they were, I was a little concerned about portion size. I would not have been surprised to find these sandwiches to be smaller than typical. No worries. The Rueben came out, already split on two plates, with the fries split between plates as well, and what we could only guess was a free extra side of tuna-mac salad so they weren't splitting a side. The roast beef sandwich was better than usual deli roast beef, sliced thin and piled on two sliced of bread and covered with a good amount of beef gravy that was (SURPRISE) not overly salty. Very nice indeed. Our boy ate 3/4 of his grilled cheese, which is a good sign for that one. Both halves of the Rueben disappeared quickly. By the time we finished, the waitresses were cleaning up around us, and the kitchen crew had called over to make sure it was safe for them to shut down the grill and clean up. All of this politely and with a bit of joking around. They were friendly, and their choice of music in the diner was excellent. Speculator isn't a town we visit often, as in, this is the second time I've been there after a work visit six years ago. But if we find ourselves back in town, we know where to stop again."
