"simply said, ava gene’s is my favorite special events restaurant in portland. with a focus on local, seasonal ingredients, the kitchen sets a unique spin on Italian cuisine and turns around some of the most tasteful foods around. add to this impeccable service in a fine dining, but not stuffing atmosphere and they have a winner. although no vegan or vegetarian restaurant, the cook is planted and changes the menu weekly to present the best of seasonal products. the results are spectacular. the salads offer unexpected combinations such as beet and crunch mixed with a generous selection of cuddly perfectly dressed so that the taste of each ingredient in the mouth dips other salads can contain speditions, fresh beans, nuts and squash. if it is on the menu, the borlotti bean disc is not to be missed. I never thought I'd pay $15 for a slice of toast, but that's not an ordinary toast. a garlic, lemon pure of the Borlotti beans is made on a thick piece of roasted land, with all the beans and dipped with garlic and olive oil. with the contrasting textures of creamy beans on the crispy brot, who needs avocado toast? that increases the cash when it comes to dead. the homemade pasta contains eggs, but they always have a vegan pasta option or two that can prepare them. Depending on the season it could be kale pesto, pomodoro, chili, garlic mandel, mushroom or my favorite, nuts ragout. Vegan and vegetarian elements are not displayed on the menu, but the well-informed server can tell them what items can be made vegan or vegan. the service around is the upper notch. the server are friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. dessert is limited to the current Sorbet taste. for more varied offers you can skip the sorbet and go a block to the west to try the vegan ice creams at salt straw or a few blocks further for the vegan yogurt at eb bean. in a city with so many vegan restaurants is my preference to apply them as often as possible. but I also appreciate the non-vegan restaurants that go out of the way to be vegan friendly, and few (if any) do it better than ava gene’s. Chef joshua mcfadden is really the vegetable deserter. he knows how to prepare nicely and combine them in wise that produce their unique aromes. I wish happy cow would let me give five stars because this is a restaurant that deserves this review easily."

Portions were small and over priced. Asparagus salad was good but over priced. There are as good restaurants for less money and much better restaurants for the same price. I don’t t think I will be back.

If I could give 6 stars, I would. Such incredible food and service. The staff were all so accommodating and helpful to my partner and I on our anniversary. I didn't catch our main server's name, but I want the whole team to know how special y'all made our evening. Truly a dinner to remember forever

There’s something really special about a place where you can sit, enjoy a meal, and sense that everyone from back of the house all the way to the front of house, has chosen to be there. Passion and intention seeps from this restaurant. What more can you ask for? Portland is lucky. Decent Italian food, outside the home, is hard to find in our city. My advice to anyone reading this review: Just go. Take an evening and just go. Try the olives and have a glass of grappa. Thank you and see you soon. View menu

My mom and I ate at Ava Genes last night, and it was amazing, the food was delicious, the restaurant was beautiful, and all of our waiter/waitresses were kind and funny. While my mom was making the reservation she told them that I was looking to be a food critic, and because of this, they went all out. They served us 5 complimentary dishes, one of which was a cherry galette that their sous chef made for me when she heard i was coming. When we were done with our meal they even gave us a hat and shirt. I felt like a celebrity and if I could, I would give them six stars.

Not sure why we haven’t come here sooner than we did. It goes without saying that the food was spectacular. To start we had the burrata with snow princess peaches as well as the beets with mustard gelato. Then ended with the casarecce and tortellini pasta dishes. All exceeded expectations. But it was the service that made the evening so special. Jo took care of us checking to make sure we had what we needed without coming around too much. She reminded us that the gratuity was already in the bill included which we appreciated. She also made sure the 1.5 oz pour of Eagle Rare wasn’t too much when I thought it would just be 1.0 oz. Then Robert went above and beyond with a little Stagg “digestif...

"Boxcar Pizza does creative all vegan pizza done Detroit style. I am from NY and had plenty of pizza there in the day before I was vegan. Pizza and NY are synonymous. I would love to check out Screamer's Pizza in NY next time I am there.I have only had Detroit Pizza one other time and happened to be vegan. It was alright when I had it then. I have been to Detroit where the talented rapper Eminem is from. Detroit is where the pinball like running back legend Detroit Lion Barry Sanders played. Detroit is where I was in awe when I saw the Diego Rivera murals there. Detroit isn't known for it's pizza yet lately Detroit pizza seems to be getting popular.Detroit Pizza is like a cross between Sicilian and Chicago deep dish yet comes in a square with four slices. Boxcar Pizza was named best vegan pizza this past year in Veg News magazine so had great expectations coming here. Boxcar Pizza delivered! I went with the Viktor Vaughn pizza. The pizza came with mozzarella, cheddar, kale, red onions, ricotta, mama lil's peppers, and pesto. I got it with a side of red sauce for dipping which I recommend. The pizza was very tasty. Plenty of flavor. It was a bit rich and filling for plenty of vegan cheese was used. Perhaps a touch less vegan cheese and other pizza pies with more veggies would be nice. I like that this pizza had plenty of veggies on it. I just got this and was able to eat it all. Each pizza serves one to two depending on your appetite. If you come with a friend or spouse might be good to split one and order a Kale Caesar salad to share.Viktor Vaughn is the real name of Dr. Doom who happens to be the arch enemy of the Fantastic Four in the Marvel Comics. Viktor Vaughn is also a British rapper. There are many different kinds of pizza here and am so happy that a vegan pizza place delivers tasty vegan pizza. I hope they open up branches in other cities.Recommended!"
