"Our server, Cesar, was fantastic from start to finish. We were greeted with complimentary chips and salsa, along with ice water. The salsa was quite tasty, with a nice level of spice and a smooth texture—definitely not chunky. My wife ordered her piña colada ($9) while we started with the cheese crispy appetizer. This consisted of a large fried flour tortilla topped with cheddar cheese and baked ($8.50). It was decent but nothing out of the ordinary. For her main course, my wife chose one of the house specials: camarones al mojo de ajo ($24), which she thoroughly enjoyed. As for me, I’m a big fan of taco salads served in a shell, so I was looking forward to the shrimp salad ($19.95). However, I was disappointed to find it didn’t come served in a shell, even though it’s stated on the menu that the salads are supposed to. I also didn’t have a choice of dressing, and the ranchero cheese was missing. The salad was quite bland, and the shrimp tasted boiled rather than grilled or sautéed. Thankfully, I decided to add a side of beef tamale, which turned out to be deliciously soft and warm! While it could have been an off day for the cook, or perhaps this is just how they typically serve the dishes, a side of sour cream or salsa would have greatly enhanced the experience. In my view, while El Caporal was fine, there are better Mexican restaurant options nearby, such as Hola. Service: Dine-in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $20–30 Food: 3 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 3"
