"From the street, the restaurant looked inviting. On entry, we were welcomed warmly and shown to a cozily located table. The menu offered a good range of classic French dishes, including a version of poutine (a Québécois speciality) with canard. The wine list offered a wide range of inviting wines, we chose a French red from M Chapoutier - delicious! We all three had vegetable soup to start, then we had confit of duck, burger and pizza. When they arrived, the presentation was superb, but it was surpassed by the quality and flavour of the food itself. This was a most enjoyable meal, and when the time for dessert came, the Creme Brulait (1) and Pavlova (2) were all that one could ask for. And all this served up by a friendly, helpful team who made us feel welcome and valued guests."

After contemplating where to eat in old Montreal, we chose Le Chat Noir.

I have mixed feelings about this placeFirst of all we came for dinner on January 1st so I am sure this was one of their busiest times of year.

Server was not polite. Food was not served as ordered and when returned from kitchen it was very cold. Beef bourguinon was tough. Vegetables were ice cold. Table next to us had 3 of 4 entrees returned to kitchen for same problems.

During our trip to Montreal, my family dined at this restaurant twice. The food was so delicious the first time that they insisted on bringing me to try it as well. The french onion soup was excellent, and the kids couldn't get enough of the orange juice. My wife especially enjoyed the creme brulee and couldn't stop raving about it. View menu

Classic French home-style bistro. Sat at the bar and ordered garden salad (only mediocre), but had the kidneys with mushrooms as a main which was memorable. Visually it was not greatly appealing, it was a plate with braised veal (I believe) kidneys and sliced sautéed mushrooms in a mustard sauce. I recall wondering whether I would actually be able to eat the whole plate because it seemed a bit mundane to look at. But, texturally it was light and smooth, the sauce was subtle and all worked together so nicely that I lapped it up. The house red worked well to accompany. The staff was very attentive, lots of families dining out that evening and, with torrential rain outside, I felt cozy and righ...

"This evening I opted for Toqué’s seven-course tasting menu, and while the service was nothing short of exceptional, the experience unfortunately fell flat where it mattered most—the food. I wanted to love Toqué so badly, and I was excited to see if the restaurant lived up to its reputation. To be clear, It’s not that the ingredients were bad. They were fine—perfectly average, even. But we came expecting culinary fireworks, and instead, it was more of a damp sparkler moment. The dishes were neither memorable nor particularly flavorful, leaving little to linger on the palate or in our minds. For a tasting menu at this price point, we anticipated an experience that would excite and surprise, but instead found ourselves with courses that were forgettable and uninspired. Not a single course left me wow’d and despite the modest portion sizes, many of the plates left our table largely untouched. The flavors just didn’t inspire the kind of enthusiasm that draws you back for that next bite, and ultimately, it spoke volumes about the disconnect between expectation and execution. Montreal is overflowing with incredible food, and I’ve long believed it can hold its own against some of the best food cities around the world. With that in mind, I couldn’t help but feel a little deflated. There are so many gems in this city that bring creativity, heart, and an actual punch of flavor—Toqué just didn’t do Montreal any justice tonight."
