"Hadn't been here in 4 yrs (the older bartender who flirted w/ my ex and got us in a fight was still there all these yrs later). Luckily, the guy and I are no longer so no hard feelings. That being said, the service was decent and the food was MUCH better than I remember it in 2019 (got a pimento bacon avocado burger and sweet potato fries). The burger was a little dry but the meal as a whole was pretty spot-on. The fries were absolutely delicious in every bite. They were equal parts salty and sweet and weren't too dry or greasy. The bread pudding was still refrigerated since I took it to go, so I'm sure it would've been superb if I'd had it heated up more evenly at the restaurant. It was sort of dry being nuked in the microwave but I probably should've put it, covered, in the oven on 250 or something instead. The whiskey sauce was okay, but it was heavy-handed on the whiskey. Instead of tasting the essence of it, it was like taking a shot with a slight sugary aftertaste. The parking is always a hassle getting in and out of, but provided the food stays the same caliber, I'll try to make it back in another 4 yrs."

This isn't a bad spot for grabbing a drink and a bite to eat. The waitress did forget my sauce, but at least the bartender caught it. View menu

Had the best Philly cheese steak sandwich in the state of Alabama. Great atmosphere and very clean. This was my first time there but definitely not my last.

The restaurant was bustling with diners, and even though we ordered takeout, it was easy to see why it was so popular! I highly recommend the shrimp Alfredo!

What an amazing restaurant! The fresh fish was delicious, and there were plenty of options for different preparations and toppings. We started with a refreshing spinach salad, and I had the redfish served with shrimp ragout, which was rich and full of flavor. The grilled vegetables were the perfect accompaniment. My husband ordered the Amberjack with lime and cilantro, and it was fantastic. We even shared a key lime pie—despite hardly having any room for dessert, it was too good to resist! They also had several beers on tap, and the service was excellent. I’d love to come back and try more dishes if we're in the area again!

I usually come to this restaurant several times and it has always been amazing. But this last time, I was treated rudely and disrespectfully by the lady who seats people. I don't know if she was having a bad day or if it was done in a discriminatory manner.Regardless of a refusal, there is a polite lie to tell. Maybe she didn't like us asking if two women who weren't in line and she seated at the table were already in line previously, and from there, the treatment was rude, and I asked calmly and politely. The manager came and served us very well, understood our question, and accepted the request. We were also very well and amazing attended by the waitress. The food was perfect as alyways

"If there is a restaurant that is a Birmingham institution among the wealthier crowd, there is literally only one name that locals would bring up, and it is undoubtedly Highlands. Not that there aren't other nice restaurants, but this spot has proven itself over time and is ran by a chef that most Alabamians are quite proud of. Opened in 1982, Highland's is a place that put Birmingham on the map in a positive way at a time when the post industrial iron period was about to wind down and transform the city. Frank formalized his cooking techniques by working in kitchens of San Francisco and France, creating a medley of American Southern and French cuisine that is difficult to find elsewhere. It was not a time when it was common to see a chef from Alabama going to study cooking in Europe, thus the story was already an anomaly. Frank Stitt was trying to pioneer sustainable agriculture and farming well before anybody in Alabama knew what in the world that actually meant or for that matter, cared. One of the signature items is the baked grits that has been around since the restaurant opened. It's a tasty grits preparation and without a doubt, something to try. The pheasant was spectacular, fairly lean and with a crispy delicious skin, served with grits and green beans. Pastries here are created by Dolester Miles, who has been in the job for well over 30 years. The opera cake is absolutely spectacular, gentle and complexly layered. The basque cake is peachy and moist, with a crispy delicious exterior and Chantilly cream. Not only are these likely the best desserts to discover in Alabama, but may be some of the best to be found in America. The attentiveness got derail was clearly evident. As far as service, generally fine, but not particularly attentive. The waitress did not seem in much of a mood to welcome people to the establishment. Many items on the menu were running out by 8:30pm on a Saturday night. Nobody was particularly impressed with the flounder that got substituted for the grouper. And then there are other questions, why would you run out of grits? They know they are always filled to capacity and ingredients to make grits are not immediately perishable. Highland's has by this point in Birmingham's history become a classic. It's evident that most people here have been around for decades working at their jobs and serving the rich crowds of Mountain Brook. It's a place of great food and shows many combinations of ingredients that are nearly impossible to find elsewhere, let alone be executed this well."
