"I started with the Seafood Chowder, which I thought would be delicious. However, it contained just three tiny pieces of dry fish, which was the only seafood I could find. The broth was lackluster at best. For my main course, I ordered Short Ribs, which had been heavenly on my last visit. The waitress suggested pairing it with whipped potatoes. I noticed Yukon Gold potatoes mentioned on the menu and asked her if that was what I would be getting. She simply replied, "They're whipped." I attempted to clarify that I was inquiring about the type of potato, but it seemed too complicated to continue. Although the food arrived quickly, my short rib was nowhere near as good as the first time. The flavor was decent, but the meat was very dry. Having had neck cancer, I have difficulty swallowing dry food. I asked the waitress for more sauce and mentioned that the meat was dry. Her response was, "Just chew it longer!" She then brought me a tiny cup with about a tablespoon of sauce, which was completely inadequate. Overall, my meal was a disappointment. I think I’ll try a different restaurant next time."

Server and hostess were efficient and kind. My father got a steak, which he loved, and I got a classic burger with sweet potato fries, which was also delicious. Highly suggest going to Urban Cellar if you're looking for somewhere good to eat in Des Moines.

I met some friends for happy hour on the Friday before Memorial Day. We sat on the patio to enjoy half off select beverages and appetizers. Our sever was timely and fun to chat with. The food and drinks were good. There was a steady flow of customers. I recommend arriving early to avoid the sunshine.

Recommended by someone who lives in Des Moines and it was a good tip. Calamari was unique with great dipping sauce high recommend as an appetizer. Had the chicken jalapeno pasts, cavatelli, and salmon salad. Cannot go wrong with any of these. The margarita on cocktail menu was just ok. Would eat here again next time in town.

The atmosphere of this restaurant was fantastic. They offered an impressive selection of wines available for both takeout and in-house enjoyment. With a fireplace and the ability to accommodate large groups, it was very inviting. While the appetizers and main courses were excellent, the dessert didn’t impress and is definitely something to skip. The service was also good; our server was new and handling a big group but managed well. View menu

Wow, what an incredible dinner! Thank you, Dominic, for making my trip to Des Moines truly special. The dinner and drinks were fantastic at this wonderful restaurant. Dominic really made the evening memorable with his excellent recommendations. We enjoyed the salmon for one and the Steak De Burgo for the other two. I appreciate you accommodating my girlfriend's dietary restrictions! Thanks for making my return to Iowa such a great experience!

I've been here three times. My first experience was excellent—the food was great, though the service was a bit scattered since it was a busy night. However, during my most recent visit, I ordered a steak sandwich cooked medium, but it came out well done and was lacking in flavor except for the blue cheese. Also, I think $7 for a side of mashed potatoes is a bit steep. Since the steak sandwich used to be my go-to meal, I'm going to reconsider dining here again.

We had an excellent experience at Urban Cellar! Our server recommended the Mulberry Mule, and it was fantastic! The meals we ordered were very good, although my wife did notice quite a few skins in the mashed potatoes. The chocolate cake for dessert was absolutely delectable. Our server could have been a bit more attentive, as it took a long time for her to bring us the bill after we finished eating, but that's a minor issue in the grand scheme of things. Overall, this was a wonderful place for my wife and me to enjoy a nice date night. View menu

Have been here many times and can unequivocally say that Urban Cellar is consistently excellent, from the service to the food. Kyle, the sommelier, is truly amazing and Nick the chef is one of the best chefs in town.I highly recommend and you are honestly missing out if you don’t try it.Although there isn’t anything on the menu that I have ever tried and not enjoyed, particularly excellent dishes include the steak tacos (the best in town), the shrimp pasta, the deburgo, the salmon blt, and the roasted mushroom pizza. Hubby says they have the best Rueben in town!

The crab cakes and crispy, thin onion rings were excellent, while the margherita pizza was just average. I appreciate the updates to the menu, but I'm not a fan of the current preparation for the scallops. The Brussels sprouts with tomato jam were delicious, but would have paired better with pork, beef, or chicken, as they overwhelmed the delicate flavor of the scallops. I've had perfectly cooked scallops here before, but this time they were left to sear a bit too long. We were seated at a high-top table with a larger group, but the chairs were extremely uncomfortable. The footrest was too low for many guests, causing their feet to dangle. I found the edge of the chair seat cut off circula...
