"Lena, let me start by saying it pains my heart to write this review. I so miss you! I have loved everything about Lena's for years. Unfortunately, with her passing, things have been changing. From smaller portions to recipe changes that are slight — but noticeable. I understand some of that is due to the times we live in. Others are simply a different cook, even following a long time recipe, comes with subtle differences. I accept all of that. Sadly, upon my last visit, my heart is fully broken. Our server was almost standoffish with a negative vibe. Professional, yes, but with an uncomfortable aura. It's hard to explain other than saying not the usual friendly interactions one would be accustomed to after eating at Lina's. The dining room was a bit busy, not any more busy than I've previously seen. Perhaps one larger table in the mix, overall nothing that was screaming “we're slammed!” In fact, in comparing to summer (when the extra patio seating is open) I'd call it almost slow. But for Lena's this is a typical Friday night volume. We ordered drinks, appetizer, and entrée once our server made it to us. We then sat with an empty table until the salad course came about 10 minutes later. The server admitted to forgetting our drinks and promptly getting them to the table. Annoying but understandable Next came the appetizer. The mozzarella bread is fantastic still, I give it that.l! Sadly, this is the last we saw of our server for the next 45 minutes, at least. We wanted to eat all the appetizer, but we held on to restrain as we knew of the goodness soon to come. We ate our side salads and a few slices of cheese bread, as we finished our beers. Then we waited... and waited... and waited. Empty glasses at the edge of the table, appetizer off to the side, dishes from salad stacked. Waiting....waiting...waiting. Our server passed the table a few times while helping others, no word. I was noticing almost a full turnover of tables. This is when our server came over and asked if we wanted another round. No word on the food, no apology for the delay. I was expecting an update when the second round arrived but nothing. Just sat on the table and then gone. Fast enough that when I attempted to ask, all I had to speak to was a shadow. After we finished our second round of drinks, we decided it was time to go. We had watched more than one table, who arrived well after we did, leave with their to go boxes. As we stood and donned our coats, the server came over with two plates and sat them down. With only a “sorry it took so long” they where gone once again. We sat back down and were ready to feast on the love that is Lena's four cheese mac and cheese with bacon. It took some time, but it had arrived. I first noticed something amiss when I realized the bacon topping was darker than usual. I took a bite and confirmed my visual. Burnt bacon flavor permeated throughout. The dish I normally would be writing about with lust was now a pile of mush noodles, swimming in a gritty cheese sauce, topped with the forementioned burnt bacon. Both dishes sad and not deserving to be in that restaurant. I suspect someone may have forgotten things once again and left our plates under the pass heat lamps, cooking them to destruction. We flagged down our server and said, “this is rather disgusting.” Without given the chance to even express further, our plates were whisked away. No apology, no comment, no wanting to hear anything. I truly feel they knew and were expecting our reaction. The server returned with the bill. At that point, we both were good with that. Bill on table, we realized the bites of the entrée cost us full price. Thankfully, our server intercepted as we paid with a new bill, “I talked to my manager and had the mac and cheese removed.” our server said. Once again, keeping it short and not sticking around to apologize or to hear any comments. Hearts heavy, stomachs empty and craving Lena's love, we left. We ate at the only other place open that New Year's Eve, the local bowling alley. Parking: Small lot but matches up well with volume in dining room. If the lots full, you will wait. Kinda that simple."
