"the fois gras was the best ever! Way better than Pomeroy in Wilmette. . .just really, really good. Miramar is my fave restaurant in Highwood. We love the onion soup, the oysters, the nicoise salade, the steak frites. . so many items! oh, the mussels are really good too. I have to say the Dover sole is nowhere near the one I had north of Amsterdam on the North Sea. . I don't even know if it is really Dover Sole. . . I wouldn't order it again. But I would try the scallops. . they looked very good. . and I definitely would order the steak frites. I also like that the restaurant is not overly loud like many of the current restaurants. . Longitude315 is so very loud and unpleasant for older people. The drinks are not as good or as varied as other restaurants. . and the wine pours are certainly smaller than most other restaurants we've been to. . not nearly as generous. . but still, I would rank it as the best in Highwood.. . . really a very nice choice. Also, the servers were always there for us. . they shared the tables so anyone passing by could be flagged to help as needed. I'm a big fan of Miramar! Highly recommended!"

A cozy room, in classic French bistro style, serving classic French bistro fare. Well prepared not brilliant but very good not crowded on an off night. No regular bartender resulted in limited cocktail options (our waiter made or drinks) so I was not able to order a Vieux Carré or a Sazerac. Still, we had a lovely time. Menu provided great apps and small plates and you could build a full dinner that way, which some at the table next to us did. Excellent steak frites, skate wing and a good wine list.

"I went to Froggy's the other night with a friend for a midweek dinner. It is definitely not the first time I've been there, but it may be the last. First of all, The servers were really in the weeds and seemed to be really understaffed. I understand that it gets busy, and things get delayed. Nothing really got delayed, but we were looking for them a lot for water and stuff. Secondly, but most importantly, was the food. The oysters we had were good and fresh. However, their escargot variation was weird, especially with the peapods. They were out of anchovies for the ceaser salad, but after tasting it, I don't think they use anchovies in the dressing. The flavor of their dressing along with the raw shaved beet was not good. Our main courses were just not good. I ordered the Bouillabaisse and it was terrible. It was like a weird tomato-based sauce with over cooked proteins. The lobster has no meat in the tail, and their was no lobster meat added, as the server described in the special. Not only the weird sauce, no toast points or Rouille... They served it with mashed potatoes and vegetables that stuck out like a sore thumb. On top of that all, my mussels weren't de-bearded... I couldn't eat them. The desserts weren't any better. We had the passion fruit mousse and the poached pear. The mousse had a strange texture, like they didn't allow whatever gelatin mixture they used to set up correctly. The taste was ok, but got drowned out by the raspberry sauce. On the poached pear, where is the pear? All I tasted was poaching liquid and that's it. For the price and quality, there are tons of better French options around the area. I guess if I feel like normal french cuisine, that a true Frenchman would be proud of, I will across the tracks and down the street to the other French option. Honestly, I think they are way passed their prime and need to revamp everything before I come in again, especially their menu and quality. "I work not too far from this cafe and have been there several times. The teas and coffees are great--I especially have liked the lattes I 've had--and I 've also taken advantage of the packaged teas and small gift shop when I 've needed to give a gift. The quality of the food, though, has been inconsistent--sometimes good and sometimes rather disappointing. Memorably, I had one dish that was garnished with pickled daikon that would have made a nice garnish if sliced very thin--but it was served in huge chunks that were so strongly flavored as to be inedible. On the other hand, I have enjoyed the grilled 'cheese ' with tomato soup. Frequently, the restaurant is advertising for staff so I really think that the inconsistency is likely caused by the high turnover almost every place is having right now. So it 's the reason I 'm only giving three stars, but I also plan to keep going there, so it 's not a dealbreaker for me. If you want something sweet, I highly recommend the sliced layer cake, which comes from Pie Pie My Darling. The available cake flavor changes monthly. This restaurant also has entertainment fairly regularly (including sometimes in the evening, when they 're otherwise not usually open), and hosts some community activities. As some others have noted, the prices are a little high, but I think that they are not out of line for the area. Most of the seating is indoors, with a few sidewalk tables outside in nicer weather. Parking is relatively easy--there is a small parking lot for the strip mall, plus street parking and a small municipal lot across the street. From the Highland Park Metra station, the walk is an easy few blocks. Updated from previous review on 2022-08-14"
